Diary Entries in English

Recent diary entries

I actually was planning on writing a user diary about this- I’ve run into one big issue recently looking at scale and proportion with my cities- while my scale for buildings, exits, etc has actually been somewhat accurate, I actually severely overestimated how big I was drawing my cities on the map. I think I may have forgotten that I was looking at a scale in kilometers instead of miles.

The Idea…

The northwestern coast of Freedemia is supposed to be home to most of the nation’s population. I imagine it as a pretty big megalopolis of sorts, an endless band of metropolis from Ciudad Nature over the border down to the southernmost tip of the Quentinsburgh area.

The area @Portopolis pointed out in a user diary entry a couple days back on urban divisions between Haroldsborough and Fort Elwood is a place I hope to fill in with a very dense “suburb” of sorts, probably an extention of Fort Elwood (I’m thinking maybe a city by the name of Southfort). I’m still filling in density in Haroldsborough, Fort Elwood, and Laneston/Vandover (as well as in Quentinsburgh/Mathersboro) so it may be a while before that comes to fruition. Now, as to @Thunderbird’s point in the comments, It would have to be far more dense than the Jersey side of the shore (I was thinking more like the denser parts of the Brooklyn/Queens side). I do imagine the northwestern Freedemian Coast as a megalopolis, hopefully in some ways including Ciudad Nature of the Autonomous Province of Nature just over the border.

The Problem…

Looking now, Quentinsburgh, a city that is supposed to have a population approaching 5 million, is smaller in size than somewhat sprawled but smalltownish Raleigh, NC, a city with only about 400,000 people. In order to make that work, I’d need an IMMENSE amount of density, probably more than Manhattan, way too much even for my global modern metropolis-megalopolis idea to work well.

Hello all,

There has been talk on and off about the way we communicate here on OGF. I agree with some others that creating a forum would be the best way to collaborate. What we have with User Diaries is good, but topics disappear into the past within days. With a forum we would be able to continue discussions even on topics that were started weeks or months ago.

I know we have talk pages on the wiki, but you have to actively seek those out one by one. A forum would provide more visibility for ongoing discussions.

As far as funding, I would be happy to chip in for server hosting fees. I’m sure some of the other mappers would do the same.

What do others say about this?

On OpenStreetMap Wiki there is that article (osm.wiki/Multilingual_names) about usage of Key:name:language-code when adding names for pepole who want to render the map in different languages. Does it make sense to use it in OGF? If yes, are we supposed to use language codes for real-life languages or we can use the OGF ones (for example :in (as in Ingerish) instead of :en)?

I’ve been since a month ago with this idea around my head. What about creating a gulf on the southeastern part of the Vinn sea? The gulf would give Esthensia and Vinnmark bigger coastlines, as well as creating a Denmark shaped peninsula where Welstand-Westrijk and Shilesia are, so they would gain a coastline (pretty interesting if they want to fully integrate in the Vinn Sea community) , they would significantly increase their territory and they would lose these artificial-looking frontiers which look really odd in a region that seems to be inspired by Old Europe. Vinnmark’s new coastline would look a bit like the east coast of Sweden, with lagoons and pretty detailed islands, and I would be able to connect Berles to the sea (make it look like Stockholm and Helsinki mixed together).

We would connect that lake to the sea

The image features a basic scheme of how would it look, of course we would improve it a lot.

So what do you think?

This is kind of a “fun” post to talk about metropolitan divisions which is usually an area of several suburbs (As in not counted as part of the main municipality) that have something in common whether income geography etcetera. It is kind of cool to divide a metro into things like that and truly no large metro unless one were the main city is absolutely dominating sort of like Houston, Texas were I live, or sprawl is equal in all general directions; don’t have these divisions. Even in the Houston example their are regions that people normally group as slightly separate in the Houston area like Fort Bend County, Galveston County, Montgomery County’s but these don’t really count. Real World Examples- North Shore Chicago- wealthy towns on the lake north of Chicago. Best Southwest Dallas- A region of Dallas that is known mostly for it’s high AA middle class. NOVA- Northern Virginia suburbs that have their own CBD’s and while connected to D.C is an impressive area of multiple million people Main Line- Philadelphia (collection fo historically wealthy suburbs) etcetera. This isn’t just an American concept it is just that America popped to my mind first. As you can see they vary in sizes from as little as 160,000 people (Best SW) to more than 3.5 million (NOVA).

Here are some named and unnamed OGF examples.

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=12/20.4230/86.5541 South Gobras city Area- (unnamed) discussed this with indyroads???? or another mapper in the area a few months back that the economy while not solely based has a large amount of its GDP coming in from the grooming and breeding of horses.

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=12/20.6872/86.9204 East Gobras city Area-(unnamed), it is just a cluster of suburbs east of Gobras not sure what they would be known for.

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=11/18.8241/88.9934 Depending on the number of commuters the Marapura area and a few of the bordering suburbs can be called Gobrasi Khaiwoon or something.

I thought of some ideas for this site.

  1. A custom world creator would be awesome! That way people can make their own worlds too by making their own continents, countries, and permissions on what countries people can edit or not be able to edit. And to where you can create an unlimited number of worlds.

  2. A driving simulator for Opengeofiction so people can enjoy driving on the roads and such. (it can have different modes you can choose from below)
  3. Realistic Real Life-like Mode
  4. GPS Mode (custom voices - you can make your own custom voice too and make it the way you want it to speak) It can be like you’re going on a trip!
  5. Cars around you mode (With cars driving around; you can set up traffic too)
  6. Custom vehicle and transportation mode (you can use any vehicle stuff)

  7. Realistic Aerial pictures on the map (and to where you can place trees, signs, mountains, custom images on signs, etc. on the aerial map) (2D and 3D)

These ideas can also be great for future news reports.

These are just suggestions…

I’ll be able to tell the rest of ideas soon if I can remember the others.

Thanks for reading. - JoshuaRoadMapper

I updated JOSM to version 10966 (windows) yesterday like a good boy should. The performance at high zoom levels (16+) is sluggish and glitching, finally hanging up and crashing when zoomed all the way in. Its unusable for fine city work. Before I revert to an older version: Does anyone have a similar experience? Any wisdom to share? Yes I have updated Java to the most recent version too.

Thanks in advance, r.s.

I am opening procurements on developing Omniville. The procurements include

  • Development of geography (rivers, mountains etc)
  • Development of roads and railroads
  • Construction of public transport, subways, buses
  • Construction of a new 3-terminal airport in Ouroboro
  • Development of new cities

Please message me for more info.

Thank you!

Hey there,

I’m a bit lost when it comes to importing additional templates (usually infoboxes) from wikipedia to the ogf wiki. I’ve copied the code for the official post template, as well as the respective /doc template, but don’t really know what to do to get the items in {{{ }}} show up as they should. Do I miss “sub-templates” from the original wiki, or is it a completely different issue? And is this idea even practical? Thanks in advance :)

Hi everyone,

For my octobre challenge I focused on an Island here. This Island is located in the Midi archipelago which is a very touristic area.

I concentrated my mapping on land use, coast line and details in the some villages. I am quite pleased with the result even if some things could be way better.

Unfortunaltly, october was not long enough for me to finish this project. I will try to complete it as soon as i can.

Happy Mapping Thomas

Hello folks! I just happened to realized I created my OGF account 1 year ago today, the time has just flown by.

Below is Patriot City after one year of work. This is a city inspired by Philadelphia and its surrounding area. Patriot.png

I’m working on filling in the entire city before I move on to its suburbs and the rural areas of Jefferson. I do have a lot planned for that. I have not done much work on the wiki yet, I plan to do a lot more in the future.

Demographically, the wealth in the city is concentrated to the south and east, with some exceptions.

Recently I’ve been working on the south side of the city. This is an area along the river, a few miles south of Center City. It is very “old money.”

By contrast, the large north side area is lower middle class, consisting mostly of densely packed single family homes, low density apartment complexes, and a few trailer parks.
