I recently encountered a small problem while mapping.

When I was mapping the “regions” (an administrative division, comparable perhaps to a German Bundesstaat) in Abrilleron, I originally used admin_level = 4 in their relations. However, because Abrilleron is quite small, this turned out to be a bad idea. Because they show up starting at zoom level 4, where Abrilleron is less than 10x10 px, the region boundaries dominated the look of the nation. Now I have tried to use admin_level = 5 instead. Here I have the opposite problem. Now the borders don’t show up until zoom level 11. But at that point all regions are already so big that the name isn’t displayed anymore.

This is how Abrilleron looks at zoom 10 now.

For comparison, the most developed part at zoom level 11.

Do you have any ideas how I can work around this? Split regions into smaller sections? Remove them from the map? Something else entirely?

Hello mappers!

Recently I’ve been working hard on fixing the airport of Trevers. I’ve also been working on an airline for Paroy. You’ll read all about it in this post.

Paroyan Airways

Paroyan Airways is the national-flag airline for Paroy with bases in Trevers and Coleraine (future). Currently it is looking for international and intercontinential destinations. Paroyan Airways provides both passenger and cargo flights.

Let me know what cities and airlines you would like connected to Trevers (or Coleraine, although it’s not drawn yet).

Hi OGFers,

Would anybody be interested in another online chat? I think the consensus from the last one was that it was best confined to one or two time zones, so will probably be mostly UK mappers, perhaps anybody from Germany, France and Netherlands can join in too.

I now have a much faster computer so actual video chat is a possibility. Comment if interested and try to indicate when is a good time.

I have managed to put up a wiki of my country of Euresia, with updates the country’s flag, land elevations (my attempts), and highways. Here are some images of what I want to accomplish.

![my elevation/proposed highway system] (http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/images/8/89/Euresia_ElevDraw_v2jc.jpg)

I hope to write more on my country and expand.

Thanks for looking.

I’ve been doing Luciano’s mapper challenge for this month, focusing on the city of Kanton.

The university campus: http://opengeofiction.net/#map=18/52.10895/110.98005

The old factory area near the station, now mostly apartments and the museum and cultural centre, although the piano factory still operates: http://opengeofiction.net/#map=17/52.10193/111.00635

Here we can see an out-of-town shopping centre, and a large complex of test tracks for certifying cars and transport research: http://opengeofiction.net/#map=14/52.1567/110.9462

And the medieval island and cathedral: http://opengeofiction.net/#map=17/52.10625/110.99134. Many touristic buildings exist here, like the old bishop’s palace, the Old School, the st Clair pensioner’s home, the cathedral library and choristers’ school and the old town hall. There are plenty of watering-holes for the tourists. Are the medium-sized buildings (eg those on Domkatu) about the right size for wealthy merchants’ houses?

I want to put a ‘no straight on’ or ‘must turn right’ turn restriction on the junction of Saarkatu and Säntjanas Õt, but the only way I can see to do this is to create a multipolygon relation, which seems bizarre. I see this symbols quite often in OSM so I know they can be created.

Since April I have been elaborating the landscapes of Řots (the southwestern part of the province of Bořāzint) and more recently also Wyster (County Cervirc); especially the latter had received only little attention in the past couple of months…

In the case of the latter, I noticed something strange in the editing programs I use (iD + potlatch): part of the coastline in the south seems to be inverse sometimes, with land and see occasionally swapping places. When I upload changes however, nothing seems to be out of the ordinary on the map. Is this just a bug or should I fix something?

Sorry that this new challenge is a little bit late. I have been very busy offline, and have set a new record, this past week: I haven’t opened JOSM for 6 days straight. That seems like a record for me, since discovering OGF.

Luciano’s Mapper’s Challenge #2 - May, 2016

Some mappers are very good at focusing on a specific area and mapping it to an extremely complete level of detail. This challenge will probably be useless for those kinds of mappers. But for me, and I know for many others, it can be hard to find “focus” and hard to really, truly complete a given area. It’s too easy to flit around the map, working on various things, and never really reach a sense of completion with a given area.

Arguably, the ONLY time I’ve really, truly completed an area is with my little Ardispherian exclave of Sarangdo. And that was more than a year ago, now, and further, it still could use more work.

So the challenge for the month of May is to try to concentrate on mapping on a single area. I would say maybe a maximum of 100km²(which is the size of a compact city)

The challenge has two levels.

  • Advanced Challenge: for the month of May, ONLY map in your chosen, focused area. There is always more to map. If streets feel complete, work on buildings. If land covers feel complete, work on naming things. If building outlines are complete, work on putting detailed information about shops, banks, schools, etc. You can go into micromapping, adding housenumbers or sidewalks or traffic lights and turn lanes.
  • Easy Challenge: for the month of May, chose some smallish area that you consider well-mapped and more-or-less complete in a way that you like, and try to reach that same level of completeness for your working area.

Bracket from 2016 IFWC

The IFWC has ended. Congratulations to Mariana and Castellán for getting 1st and 2nd respectively.

Most of these were ranked randomly, starting with randomized teaming, then randomly playing against each other. However, teams that had demonstrated a large amount of interest were a bit more likely to progress. I deliberately had Freedemia lose round two so others could progress.

Basically the championship would have been very close, and instead of the normal games where someone won by reaching 10, since you have to win by 2 the score would have been 17 to 15 because it was such a close game.

Hello my fellow OGF-ers, I’ve got several things to say today, so I’m just gonna work them off in a list.

1.) As some of you may have read already I’m planning to have my country be somewhat 1950s/ early 1960s retro like. Following this I received some feedback from you that it should be guided by a proper backstory . Following a lot of evenings of thinking (and diet coke) I came to conclusion to have it be like this: Up to the late 40s everything goes its normal path down. After a possible war/threat scenario, Pasalia even considers using the nuclear weapons it build. This would then lead to a ‘cold war’ situation and, even more important, a large uproar around the world. This again would lead to some countries setting up anti-pasalia rallies which would somewhat isolate it culturally from the outside. Now the 50s thing comes into play which would cause the country to stay in that certain way for longer than usual, with only slowly making progress. After the whole thing cooling down in the late 60s/70s maybe (?), it starts becoming more modernized, but meanwhile the population has found the way everything so nice they choose to keep many aspects of it. Now that is where someonee of you could get the big role: First of all like always your feedback, opinions and nagging is always appreciated :p Second: Anyone of you wanting to be a part of this as the big bad nation?

Aside from that: I’m currently also busy with creating ‘Futuria City’ which is a planned city build in the 50s,60s and possibly into the 70s even. Imagine it a bit as a mix between real Brasilia and La Defense in Paris. Any companies wanting to have a office in a cosy skycraper with added parking garage? Currently looking to fill up the downtown area.

Sooo…what do you guys think,hm?

Greetings -kingfries

Well, I’m a little bit late closing this out. I ended up extremely busy this past weekend, and spent a new record minimum amount of time on my OGF hobby - less than an hour.

Let’s hear the results!

I know BMSOUZA kept a record of his challenge progress here - a very inspiring idea:

http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/User:BMSOUZA/Sandbox/Mapper_Challenge

Seeing his idea, I “blikied” my work on the challenge here:

http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/User:Luciano/Bliki

I achieved the advanced challenge, I think, with only two “highway” tags the whole month, and both were “highway=pedestrian” so I don’t feel too guilty.

Everyone else, post your results, thoughts, achievements, etc., in comments.

Coming soon: May challenge!

Well, i did something wrong and name of Quartia (aka Kwartia) region of Antharia isn’t showing on the map. I put a name tag in it, as in all other tags. What’s wrong with it? Any ideas? btw. doing these divisions was scary, i throught that i’ll break all country borders in the area. But it turned out well :D .
