The Edetanea Convention or Edetanea Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and their resources. It is named after the city of Edetanea in Castilea Archantea, where the Convention was signed in 1872. This treaty came into force in 1875 (it was the first modern treaty between nations aimed at conserving natural resources). Since then, states from all the world’s geographic regions have acceded to become “Contracting Parties”.

Every four years, representatives of the Edetanea Convention Contracting Parties meet as the Conference of the Wetlands (COW), the policy-making organ of the Edetanea Convention which adopts resolutions and recommendations to administer the work of the Edetanea Convention and improve the way in which the Parties are able to implement its objectives (“the maintenance of the ecological character of the wetlands, achieved through the implementation of ecosystem approaches, within the context of sustainable development, for the benefit of humankind”).

Under the Edetanea Convention, a wide variety of natural and human-made habitat types ranging from rivers to coral reefs can be classified as wetlands. Wetlands include billabongs, coral reefs, fens, lakes, mangroves, marshes, mudflats, peat bogs, salt marshes, swamps, or bodies of water - whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary. Water within these areas can be static or flowing; fresh, brackish or saline; and can include inland rivers and coastal or marine water to a depth of six metres at low tide. There are even underground wetlands. Wetlands provide fundamental ecological services and are regulators of water regimes and sources of biodiversity at all levels - species, genetic and ecosystem. Wetlands constitute a resource of great economic, scientific, cultural, and recreational value for the community and play a vital role in climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Hello mappers!

It’s been a while since I posted my last update on the city of Trevers. And since it’s the end of the year, I figured it would be nice show what I’ve been doing this year. I wanted to do a lot this year, but because my personal life was very busy I didn’t come really that far with what was on the planning.

Nevertheless have been working all year around Trevers, and it’s not finished at all. Yes, I’ve made some significant and noticeable changes and I’ve restuctured and organised I’ve completely changed the forest area Monument Hills – which to me looked very weird in the middle of the city – for a Monument Park, which is very large and empty at the moment, but will be filled up more when I start working on detailing the surrounding suburbs.

I’ve been working on San Mateo (wiki), the seaside resort city next to Trevers. The structure of how it will look is already very visible. There are also some parts of Starford mapped in more detail, most of it is just roads yet. A suburb that is already mapped extensively is Fletcher, which is located underneath the airport.

For the most part I’ve been working on detail. Some highlights are the Seneca Stadium, a sport and event venue which is planned to be used somewhere in Geolympic history. It features a sunken logistics lane (which is actually on ground level) and a large plaza and parking garage beneath the stadium.

Also, I’ve been working on the Unity Station (wiki), the main railway station of the city. The station building now includes a mall and the area now features a new square with decoration, bus station and various services.

There have been many updates to larger railway stations like Concordia, but also Fletcher International Airport railway station (wiki). This one was more difficult because I had to map under all the existing features. The airport itself is also an absolute highlight for me. Also some subway and bus stations are ready to be used in the next year.

And the results are in!

Thank you for all your submissions to the 2016 Golden Delta Film Festival!

All the ideas for films were really impressive! I had a hard time choosing among the many entries, which one would win each category! I did my best to share the awards accordingly. Every user who submitted a film won at least one award for their films.

The winner for best film was Wiwaxia’s The Unspeakable Distance of the Stars given the ammount of details and affort out on the wiki page by its creator, Demuth!

I’m including here images with the winners, that can be seen in the wiki page: http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/2016_Golden_Delta_Film_Festival

I’m also including the countries that did not win this year as winners in previous years, check it out and edit as you like: http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Golden_Delta_Film_Festival

Hi! Even through recently I’ve been doing some stuff in Midistland, I’m also working on my own country. Ligota is suppposed to be the capital of Shilesia, I want the city to be the OGF equivalent of Katowice (with some slight modifications - instead of mining and industry there will be trade and maybe some tourism thanks to the Hetzer Lake. And the city will be bigger). Even through it’s still very early to ask for feedback I’d like to ask now and later have less problems with the city. Particularily, I want to know your opinion on:

  • Multilingual mapping - I’ve added name:de and name:en tags, so on different computer settings it should render in Ingerish and Welsish (aka Gaerman, Kalmish and however do you want to call German here). Is that a good solution or should I abandon it?
  • Building style - there aren’t very much of these in the city right now, but these that are there aren’t aligned with anything. Is this style of mapping buildings okay? If no, is there an option in JOSM allowing to draw perfectly straight and even buildings in better tempo than 1 building/hour.
  • The road layouts - I’m actually quite happy with how it looks, but I’m looking forward to see your feedback.

Things that need to be done right now, are: a small overhaul of railways - the tracks are too far apart from each other, more buildings, more names, names that are here need to be checked if they are Silesian or just broken Silesian and of course names in forgein languages which may be wrong (I’m not the language guru :D ). Greetings

Hello everyone,

I’m a relatively new addition to this community (I’ve only been here for 5 or 6 months), and I love working on my country, Sãikyel. But one thing has been nagging me for the past few weeks: Sãikyel has virtually no economy. With the population it purports to have, my country has to have a steady influx of currency and a stable financial system. I’m not aware of any natural resources that my area has (but then again, I’m guilty for not having looked), so I was wondering if anyone around southern Uletha would like to cooperate with me to establish some multinational banks in that area?

My plan is to have Sãikyel become the “Switzerland of the continent”, a small, neutral country with a large banking economy. To this end, I have already established a few enormous banking corporations (way too big for a tentative offer like this) which I have already posted on Sãikyel’s page (SãiBank, Sãikyel and Uletha Republic Bank, etc.). I might have been too enthusiastic, but combined, the Big Seven banks have a market cap of just under USD532 billion.

If anyone wants to help me expand Sãikyel’s banking system and make it go multinational, I will be glad to take you up on your offer!

Thank you, Stara Zagora

An update on Lunaris, the town I’ve opened as a sort of collaborative mini-project to see if the community could build a town together.

It seems to have grown a lot, a freeway has been added to the island for access apart from the railroad, many roads have been added, the railroad expanded into the city itself, a few parks and a meadow have been added, a lake: Lake Aquelle, has been added, along with so much more. Specifically, a football club, two supermarkets, a restaurant, hardware store, light house, hospital, courthouse, town hall, and even an elementary school have been added!

I can’t wait to see the city in the future, though why has there been minimal development in the Iterum-Vitae ruins?

Also, just a note, Lunaris is Latin in nature, not just strictly Roman-style Latin, Latin as a whole. Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Romanian, feel free to style portions of the city after these cultures.

Cheers, Nomine.

Merry Christmas from Wesmandy, Nadolig Llawen o Tircambry, Joyeux Noël de Cernou!

It’s nearly the end of the year, so I thought it was time that I posted an update on Wesmandy.

My intention - late in 2015 - was to develop Wesmandy chronologically : map the whole country (not in too much detail) as it was in the year 1400, and then update it century-by-century while writing the history at the same time, until I got to the modern era. Since medieval towns are small and simple, and villages are even simpler, I naïvely imagined that I could have the 1400 “baseline” completed by about June …

It’s now December and I am nowhere near completing the whole of Wesmandy 1400. I have roughly mapped rivers, main roads and administrative boundaries throughout the country, and put nodes for cities, towns and villages, but have only done more detailed work in my three eastern shires of Cilveyland, Eskland and Southclist : about 20% of the total land area. There are various reasons for this, including wildly underestimating the effort needed, changing my mind about exactly what I’m mapping, getting diverted by other things (e.g. Porthbrenin), which I’ve done historically from 1400 to 1900) and simply not having as much time on OGF as I would like.

If I keep going like this, it will be years before Wesmandy joins the rest of you in the 21st century (am I the only person who didn’t map a single motorway in 2016? :) ). I enjoy “mapping medieval”, but it is frustrating to not to have Wesmandy in the modern world, so I’m thinking of changing tactics and doing my historical mapping area-by-area rather than keep the whole country in step. The national history will get written as I take the first area forward through time, so, with luck, Wesmandy will have a 21st-century presence sometime in 2017.

Water, water, everywhere!
