Hello,

if you are interested in opening an embassy in Kojo’s capital Pyingshum, please leave a comment here and I will provide you with a selection of fitting places :)

Please note that the area in question is supposed to be very dense, so it would not really make sense to have elaborate and vast properties there; for reference, this will be the largest embassy in the country, from my neighbouring country Ataraxia: http://www.opengeofiction.net/#map=18/36.43777/119.28677 So for most countries it should be sufficient to have an even smaller part of a block belonging to the embassy.

Looking forward to some replies, hope to see you soon :)

Hello. After I removed part of my country to lessen my workload I decided to redo my country. I first contacted Magor about a desert spanning his and my country. I tried out a new roadway prefix system but I decided it was bad so I will stick with the original system. I will now redo street grids so that they are up to scale and complete. I will have to redo a lot of roadways. Any tips for what I am doing to help me improve? If so please tell me! I will be glad to read and take advice! Thank you, Regards, iBallasticwolf2

Several people have raised the question of what admin_level values to use. There is no “right” way to use this tag, but it is worth your time to study the way that various countries use “admin_level” in the OpenStreetMap database.

Some conventions are that admin_level=1 is rarely used (it might be used for something like the EU or some other supranational group). Beyond this, there is a tendency mainly to use even numbers, thus in the United States, admin_level=2 is the national boundary, admin_level=4 is the states, admin_level=6 is counties, parishes or boroughs (depending on the state), and admin_level=8 is most independent town and city governments.

There is a very useful chart at the OSM wiki, here.

I decided to set up an experimental page in my user sandbox to see if there interest in creating a parallel for this OSM page for our OGF countries. You can access this experimental page here:

http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/User:Luciano/Sandbox/admin_level

[edit: I’ve consolidated the above to a general “tags” page idea: http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/User:Luciano/Sandbox/tags#admin_level.3D.3F]

As a matter of personal observation, you may choose what admin_level you want to use for a specific node or relation based on how you want it to render on the map (in either “Standard” or “histor” style), but I don’t think that’s “best practice.” Let’s focus on making maps consistent with the OSM standard, and I think we can expect whatever rendering issues there are to “catch up” over time.

My personal experience is that if I take the time to correctly set up my administrative relations with all the appropriate data, it renders quite acceptably in the “Standard” layer.

Post comments, feedback or questions here or on the talk page there.

Happy mapping!

Hi there!

After even a few months without drawing in OGF, I’m back now since a few days, developing the city of Vennburg, sixth-largest city of the Republic of Kalm with almot 900,000 inhabitants. It’s at the edge of the country’s main mining region, so in the east of the city (and within the eastern neighbouring city of Ubena), landuse=industrial will be heavily used :)

I always like to discover new cities in OGF and to follow their development. So maybe it’s the same for you… Then just have a look. And of course you’re invited to leave comments, make suggestions and so on.

Hello! I’m bored, so I came here for the day to look for suggestions and advice on my capital city Remiville in Belphenia.

I worked on Belphenia and my capital city for eight months now since I came here. I recently claimed UL312 weeks ago and finished that territory within one week because the islands were small. Okay, back to Belphenia. I am doing my best to make my capital city to be a big city. I haven’t been rushing through the project, so I decided to take my time to experiment the features I can use while mapping in JOSM.

As for the streets near downtown Remiville, I am planning to redo the street grid plans to make them more realistic than what I made upon claiming UL016 in October 2014. And speaking of freeways, how can I make the freeways near the downtown area be more realistic? Am I adding too many trunk or primary roads? I’m a fan of roads and I’m one of the AARoads.com members too, so I am considering to make my capital city’s street grid plans be more realistic. So I’m going to look at the real-life Tokyo and Dubai for ideas often. And for the residential areas, the grid plan is different when I came up with my own street grid plan, like the one in the Scarlet Heart district north of downtown, it’s mostly residential.

Somewhere in May 2015, I went on a residential road rampage in the Olympia and Scarlet Heart, and Summerdragon districts.

Some street names, even city names in or around Remiville may have to be retired. I am also planning to have some name change plans for the affected areas. Most of the time, I had to rely on the street/city name generator because sometimes I could not come up with my own street and city names. Some street names I invented, I am working on giving them meanings about where the names are derived from.

And the airport between Magehaven and Diamond Moon, I need some ideas on the Remiville International Airport. I added a nearby hotel district by the airport and redone the terminal areas and the runways.

Hi all fellow geofictioners,

I just created a wiki-site about a worldwide organisation for handball (like IHF), and wondered if any of you guys wanted to join the federation. All you need to do is to edit the wiki-site and type in your nation:

  • {{Example}} - Examplian Handball Association (EHA)

About

The city is called Mutstat (Mouth City/Confluence City) and is located here. I have created a little bit of the downtown, and Mutstathafen, the harbour city.

Any tips?

I need tips for realism, so please tell me if you think I should change or add something. I need your help! Thanks in advance

Hey there,

I’ve been drafting an inter city high speed rail network for my country Kojo, and I named it ICTR. You can read more about it here: http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/ICTR

I’m trying to come up with reasonable frequencies to run these trains on, as well as reasonable connections in the first place; I layed them out in the above article, besides generall information about the network and its technology.

I’m trying to estimate values for usership appropiate to the system’s major role it’s supposed to play in the inter-city transportation for Kojo, with nearly no domestic air travel and highways mostly focused on goods transportation and highly tolled. I tried to create an easy overview over Kojo’s major cities with their population here: http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Kojo#Demographics

Now, here’s my request; I would really appreciate some feedback on the system, especially if some routes (of which many overlap over long distances) could be overproportionally covered or undercovered. I haven’t made a simple network map yet, and unfortunately the tracks are hardly visible at the moment due to flooding, but maybe some of you guys would like to give it a shot :) Feel free to ask questions or point out any flaws you see!

Hi, guys, I’m just trying to figure out if I need to reorganize my Unionway numbering in Freedemia. As of right now, there is no real numbering system among main roads, although loops usually match the main unionway they connect to. I know in America, even numbers go east-west and odd numbers go north-south. The issue started with Unionway 4, which runs north-south between Quentinsburgh and Laneston/Vandover and east-west from Quentinsburgh to Anneitasburgh. From that point, numbers have been kinda funky, with 3, 7 and 8 running east, 12 and 10 running north-south, etc. Is this actually an issue that needs to be resolved or is this not really a problem? Thanks.

Hey there,

quick question about a little issue I’ve noticed; I recently started drawing out rough shapes for the harbour in Finkyase (cough thanks to Luciano for fixing some coastline damage I’ve done there… cough), and now this happend:

http://imgur.com/VedFEQW,tKrY9jW#0

As you can see in the second picture, clearly only one breakwater each is actually set up in the datebase, nevertheless they still also show up at a location where I moved them from days/weeks ago. Here are the coordinates in case that helps: http://www.opengeofiction.net/#map=14/33.3686/117.2657

Thanks for your help, happy mapping :)

The OGN World News Center is a new, highly visible way for national media in OpenGeofiction countries to broadcast news stories of worldwide interest.

Basically, it’s a Wordpress blog that looks like an international news site, sharing stories reported by various news networks around the globe. So far, stories have been contributed by Khaiwoon’s KTV and Ardisphere’s Ruífono.

Any OpenGeofiction member who wants to share about current events in their country is invited to join. To do so: (1) create a free Wordpress account for your national news network, and (2) send the Wordpress account name to admin so we can add you as a co-author of the blog. Once you’re added, then you should be able to post stories through Wordpress to appear on the OGN site.

Some guidelines:

  • When writing an article, provide links to OGF wiki articles and map locations, where appropriate. See the Ardisphere and Khaiwoon articles for example.

  • Assign categories to each article you post. Most articles will probably have a country category (e.g. “Khaiwoon”) and a topic category (e.g. “Sports”). Sometimes more categories will be appropriate, for example if a story is about more than one country.

  • Be realistic. Remember, it’s easy to accidentally write unrealistic things when describing your mapping projects on OGF, for example “The freeway which began construction last week is now completed.” Realistically of course, freeways take years to complete, not days.

  • Don’t write about other countries without their permission. However, you may write about your country’s response to news from another country.

  • Don’t violate copyright laws. All text should be your original work. All images should follow the same guidelines as those for the wiki.

I have been trying to compare my city to other cities (real and OGF) to see how my streets match up, but a problem I am constantly running into is the scales between maps not matching up perfectly. When comparing the Petersburgh area to Gobras City and Columbus, OH (with OpenStreetMap), the scales don’t match, which makes it difficult for me to gauge whether or not I should add or remove streets.

If anyone would like to look at Petersburgh and offer suggestions, particularly with the suburbs in the southern part of the region, I would appreciate it!
