The country names in OGF sound very original and realistic, but they all originated from something, so I thought this could help all mappers and give them ideas for naming.

My country, Reeland (Reelant), was named after the Ree people from the Ree island. The Ree island (Isle of Ree) was originally a fictional map I found outside of OGF. I later found out that there is also a Dutch surname Reeland (Reelant), but that is not connected to the country name.

So, how did you all come up with the country name? Write in the comments.

Regards

Hey there, this topic has been on my mind for a while now, and I would like to post it here for discussion.

When mapping my cities etc, I kinda just named all the things in 3 languages: Kojolese, my countries made-up language, English and German; although recently I sometimes name some things only in Kojolese, for example street names etc. However, I’ve seen at many other great maps, that even countries where the “official language” isn’t English/Ingerish, are mapped in English, which obviously helps with figuring out what everything is supposed to be. So my question is, what do you guys think about this?

I like naming stuff in its native language, cuz then it just has a more… natural feeling to it I guess, and it forces strangers to engage with the culture of the place they are viewing. On the other hand, I’m not sure if it sometimes hinders understanding for spectators. They are probably able to figure out which buildings are supposed to be train stations and which not, but without reading through the wiki or opening the map editor to look at some translations provided there, they probably won’t be able to understand why the heck so many stations’ names end on “Dyanchezi”, “Chezi” or “Norikichezi”.

Also, of course, telling names become pointless. Viewers will notice that “Goengyuē-Pang” is a city quarter, but again, without checking in the editor noone will notice that there is an origin to that name, even if only marginal. So how do you guys deal with this? Do you maybe sometimes use hybrids, naming important places with English clarifications, like “‘nativ lang word’ Stadium”? Or do you not care at all what others see when they view your places and are only concerned about your self enjoying the view ;) Hope to hear from some of you!

cheers, leo

With the close of July, 2015, the voting closes for selecting the host city for the 2016 Summer Geolympiad (Pancontinental Games). The winner, with 13 votes, is Quentinsburgh, Freedemia. The runner-up, with 9, is Old City, Neo Delta.

User Ernestpcosby, the creator of Quentinsburgh, becomes the “owner” of the 2016 Summer Geolympiad page. He has made a commitment to work with everyone at OGF to develop a fair and interesting Geolympiad for all of us. Watch for developments!

Meanwhile, if you wanted to make a Geolympiad bid and were disappointed, don’t be!

We will begin to implement a “retroactive” selection of cities for past games. Over the next several days, look for a new “Talk:2012 Summer Geolympiad” page (which I’ll also announce here) setting up a proposal and voting process for those games. Hopefully, each month we can do another selection… as we work back in time, the bid process will actually become more difficult, I think, because we will have to think through the post-games history of the venues that we create. We can propose venues that have been subsequently re-purposed or destroyed, for example.

If we do a new “old” games city selection each month, that should keep everyone busy for more than a year or two, as we work back in time.

I look forward to everyone’s participation. If you have suggestions or alternative ideas, don’t hesitate to comment or send me a message.

Thanks again for everyone’s participation.

Happy mapping.

What was your inspiration when you built your first city? I’m about to ask for a territory (1 more day) and would like to hear from others what was their experience.

(If anyone would like to see my first city in public territory I will annex the coordinates, it’s the one marked and connected to the suburbs a little farther east).

PLEASE VOTE

This is the final push to vote for what city will host the 2016 Summer Geolympiad (Pancontinental Games). Voting closes July 31.

Details may be found on the wiki Talk page:

http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Talk:2016_Summer_Geolympiad

Voting is done by “wiki signature” (type “–~~~~” under the city name you want to vote for in the voting section).

So far the city of Quentinsburgh, Freedemia has the lead with 9 votes, while running a close second is Old City, Neo Delta, with 7 votes.

So far we have only received 19 total votes for 5 active bids. I know there are more users than that on OGF … please vote! The more total votes receieved, the more legitimate the result.

Happy voting!

Thanks Isleño for the currency tutorial; this was exactly what I needed all those years! I designed some banknotes for another project between 1998 and 2000 using a program called Pagemaker (which I don’t believe exists anymore), but after that I never got the hang of it again, until now.

The unusual amount of 70 Vargu is explained by the facts that Řots uses a duodecimal counting system and that with notes of 10, 30 and 70 one would need max. three notes to get 20, 40, 50, 60, 80, 90, Ѧ0 and Ѣ0. This system of course has some disadvantages as well, but the people of Řots are used to it.

The other banknotes will have to wait though; between 27/7 and 2/8 I will be in Canada, with limited access to my geofictional stuff. On the other hand, if you live in or nearby Montreal (and possibly also Ottawa) and don’t find it utterly weird to meet with a complete stranger to discuss e.g. some bilateral relationships between our countries, you can send me a message.

Hey there,

So for quite a while now, pictures in my (and perhaps others’ too?) wiki articles that I linked to on Wikimedia Commons don’t show up any more and instead create an error. The following article is an example: http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Daiamondoshi-Pang (look under “cityscape”)

Now what I used to do was that I treated files on wiki commons like files that are already uploaded to the OGF wiki, because it appeared to me that the OGF wiki was somehow connected to Wiki Commons and accessed their datebase. Now my questions are, was I wrong? What changes were made so that now this way of doing it doesn’t work anymore? And what can I do to make the pictures show up again? Do I now need to seperately upload each and every one them to the OGF wiki? Thank you in advance :) Leo

I’ve started a new country, not so far from my original country of Wiwaxia. It’s called Østermark. It will be fairly Scandinavian in flavor, although I want to make it much poorer than current Scandinavia - maybe more like the Scandinavia of 100 years ago, with few resources other than fishing and forestry (lumber and paper). It will have a fairly small population of just under 4 million, with only one major city, one minor city and two very large towns.

I’m trying to make it much more realistic than Wiwaxia, starting with the geography and then building cities and towns, rather than the other way round as I mostly did with Wiwaxia. The country is small but with a lot of coast as it’s an island. Since the southern coast has some very big bays and large barrier islands, I want to make it very rugged with tons of small islands and islets. So it’s going to be arduous. And the interior will have a mountain chain running from Northwest to approximately the center, with lots of little lakes and streams, plus seven sizeable rivers that make their way down to the coast.

Unlike most people here, I use Potlatch instead of JOSM. Which I know, I know, is not recommended. I won’t go into why I use it. But I am trying to use it in a better way than I did with Wiwaxia. Starting with the coasts and maritime boundaries, which I’ve created tagging relations in a smarter way. But I realize in creating them and removing the boundary tag from the coasts, I’ve somehow affected how the country name is rendered - or actually the problem is that it’s not rendered - on the big map. What have I done wrong? I suspect it’s because the boundaries I’ve created are not a closed loop, but actually four different ways (the land boundary with Nucia, two different maritime boundaries with Nucia, and the maritime boundary that’s not shared with any other country). Do I need to connect them? But will that screw up how Nucia is rendered and turn it into Østermark?

So I figured it out a while ago, but I feel bad now that I forgot to tell anyone about it, so I’ll just say it the Canadian way:

Sorry, eh.

Anyway, in order to put the Babel language boxes on your user pages on the wiki, you have to do it a bit differently. Since (it appears that) a lot of Wikipedia’s features aren’t built into the OGF wiki, most language templates are missing, so I just entered them manually:

{ class=”userboxes” style=”float: right; margin-left: 1em; margin-bottom: 0.5em; width: 248px; border: #99B3FF solid 1px; clear: right; color: #000000; “

|-

! style=”background-color: inherit; text-align: center” colspan=”10” [[Wikipedia:Babel]]

|-

{{userbox-level
level =
id = [[en]]
info = This user is a native speaker of English.

}}{{userbox-level

level = 4
id = [[fr]]
info = Cet utilisateur parle français à un niveau comparable à la langue maternelle.

}}{{userbox-level

level = 1
id = [[iu]]
info = ᐃᓄᒃᑎᑐᑦ This user is able to contribute with a basic level of Inuktitut.

}}

}

Since there don’t appear to be any Babel language templates put into the OGF wiki yet (with a few exceptions), you can find them here and enter them manually: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Babel/List

Hopes this helps people out!

Hello,

as I’m sloooowly starting to fill out at least the inner part of my capital city, I’m also starting to wonder about how to create a both aestheticly pleasing as well as practical metro map. Now, I’ve been looking at some programms here and there and tried some free trials etc., but I would really appreciate if some users who are more experienced with this issue could share their experience and tell me/us, which programmes you used and perhaps even go into a little more detail or share some patterns? Of course tools which are for free are always a favourite option; But if it’s actually needed to purchase a “premium” image-editing software, then it would be nice to know beforehand what other users have archived with it in the past, and how :)

So to sum up, if you have any experience with making maps for public transportation in OGF, please share it here! I’ve seen some great ones in the wiki, so there have to be some experts here ;)

This is a reminder to all users that there is one week remaining to put together the best 2016 Summer Geolympiad Games proposal for your city.

Proposal submissions will close on July 1st. You may view the proposals or add your own at:

http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Talk:2016_Summer_Geolympiad

To summarize, we currently have 6 cities bidding:

  • Bengonia, Darcodia
  • Oyonnax, Ataraxia
  • Quentinsburgh, Freedemia
  • Reback, Drevet
  • Remiville, Belphenia
  • Villa Constitución, Ardisphere

On July 1st, bid submissions will close and voting phase will begin.

Each user (not country) with a wiki account will be allowed to vote for their favorite proposal, in an open voting process.

Happy bidding!
