Hello there, fellow mappers!

I’ve started the first major approach to shape the coastline of north-eastern Norðurland. It’s not that easy, because I have a vast fjord scape in mind. I hinted that in one of my early mapping sessions with that “saber-tooth shape” of the coastline. Now, I finally want to map the whole thing out.

But there’s a problem: the details. When you take some minutes to closely inspect this (not so) random snippet of the norwegian coastline:

osm.org/#map=12/58.9968/10.0690

you’ll see that there are dozens of hundreds of islands, all in a very rough shape. A realistic rocky fjord coastline is suchlike rutted that it is almost impossible to map it out completely in this century, eypecially on such a length. What you see in the linked map is a coastline of ca. 30 km while the coastline which I intend to “fjordize” (from Frederikshöfn northwards, measured straight, without those cuts) is 3000 km - just mainland, not the huge islands… This means millons of small isles and thousands of narrow and wide cuts, fjords and lots of frustration…

I am happy to present my nation called Palaseskia.

Here is the climate: Hot summers and cold winters.

Transportation: It will have American-like roads.

I will need to know some of the history of the countries that neighbor Palaseskia in order for me to start the history of Palaseskia.

It is also known as the Republic of Palaseskia and has been a republic ever since the beginning of its existing time. Palaseskia does a presidential election every 4 years (it use to be every 2 years).

The capital name has not been confirmed yet.

The first city I will start with is one on the northern coast. (A coast name coming soon)

Palaseskia’s road systems: 1. Palaway The Palaway Highway System is a freeway system in Palaseskia. On the signs, it’s labeled P (number) for short. The images of the signs will be revealed soon. 2. Palaroute The Palaroute System is mostly a non-freeway system and is labeled PA (number) for short on the signs. Note: More routes coming soon.

I still need to figure out what districts, provinces, or states I should have.

Also, I might do something like this: http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/OGF:Frequently_asked_questions#Can_I_split_up_my_territory_into_several_countries.3F

Pronunciation of Palaseskia: Pal-uh-ses-key-uh

The people of Palaseskia are Palaseskians.

Official Languages: Ingerish and Palaseskian Other Languages: To be confirmed (your language could be spoken there too if you want it to be, but it needs a small number of speakers)

More information for Palaseskia is coming soon.

Help! I’ve downloaded JOSM, and I’ve been following the OGF wiki page onto how to get JOSM to use the OpenGeofiction map, but i’ve gotten extremely confused at what to do all together? What does it mean adding the server? It was already on Selected entires, it’s not in the default entries? What’s the “Imagery” menu? Where do I input the OGF map layers. I am extremely confused :c

So Luciano’s current monthly challenge, ‘oops’, challenges us to fix any previous mistakes and, seeing there are probably many mistakes with my progress so far, I though I could try attempting Luciano’s challenge. So, here I am, slightly over 3 months after starting work on Tengappei, looking over my country, seeing what needs to be changed, and I thought that your feedback could be very useful, especially seeing the feedback to other player’s countries.

Whole country

So my country, Tengappei, has only some basic planning as well as a few, fairly detailed coasts and rivers. I tried following the wikis advice on how wide to make rivers and such but I feel as though I have ended up with some really narrow rivers with a perhaps too big delta. It is meant to be a tide and wave focused delta, but I might have made the rivers impact too strong. But the thing I have been focusing on is the capital city, Oniko.

Oniko

I’ve really only been doing the main roads, railways and tram lines, but recently, I’ve added some more details in the city centre with various buildings. I still need to add some more buildings as well as tag everything but I am fairly happy with the detail so far. The city is meant to be very much a commuter focused city, with a massive pedestrianized area in the center. Is this too unrealistic? I haven’t written the history of the city yet (I plan to write it this Christmas- this is the wiki so far: http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Tengappei ) but I have some ideas for reasons behind it. The main thing I think I made an ‘oops’ with is the tram network. I’m just not very sure how close to make the lines and stations in a pedestrianized area like Oniko’s. I plan to make the population of the whole city (the grey area) 3.5-5million, but that will take a long time. Anyway, thank you for listening to my rambling. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Hi, everyone. If you recall I asked a while back for some feedback on Freedemia and its progress, and major planned changes. I thought since everyone was so kind to give advice it seemed fitting to give a progress reports of sorts.

Christian Parkway is no more

One thing that had been mentioned was the clash between grid and contour in my street “grid”. A lot of that won’t be fully resolved until I go through and start fixing roads and neighborhoods (which as listed below is on my shortlist of long-term projects), but I did see one road that was a big part of the problem- Christian Parkway. The obnoxious freeway-like road going due north south through the city was not only an eye sore, but not cohesive with the rest of the city’s street grid, and a major part of the problem.

After some advice from Portopolis, I broke the roadway up into much smaller streets where needed, deleted parts, downgraded it to secondary at most from a trunk road, and left the metro mostly the same so that the roadway would still sort of exist but not appear to go against the grid so strongly. The area still needs work, but it already looks way better. http://opengeofiction.net/#map=12/-3.3472/-2.4417 It also opened up a lot of opportunities to rethink development in the large “center” of the city.

I’ve been working on the railroad…

All puns and music references aside, one of the main feedback pieces I got was that my railway system is greatly flawed, something that I definitely agree with. It was one of the first things I mapped (a lot of it was even mapped haphazardly on a tablet shudders) and it looks as bad as one might expect. Partially inspired by Myrcia’s recent overhaul of some of the area railways, I decided that while I try to get JOSM fully operational (still giving me some issues getting it to upload stuff) I would go ahead and slowly start working on the railways.

I have been working on this for little than half a year…maybe, and I think it’s time for a little look over so I can get some general feedback on my next steps and what can be improved. So, lets dive into the nation of Tierajas-Verdes.

As some of you know, I participated in the 7th Mapper’s Challenge, the detailed country-side challenge. So lets start with wrapping that up in a nice bow. I took your suggestions to head in the local area. I think the main Chandori River can still be reduced in size, though it’s meant to be like the Bangladeshi segment of the Brahmaputra or Padma, so I think it’s size is okay? I haven’t felt like working purely on the country-side since the challenge, but I think I’ll be returning to it whenever I get the feeling for it, it was an enjoyable task.

Segment of the Tirra for the Mapper’s Challenge

I think now we should look at Tierajas-Verdes in it’s entirety in general. I feel confident the coastline is in good shape until I get down to the proper details along it…which will probably be a long long way away. Here is the wiki list for the largest towns in Tierajas-Verdes and above it, the quick-noted history of the country, so you can see how all cities relate to each other, such as the north being more impoverish until extremely recent, thus the possible lack of a main connection between Punto de Christopher and Parirakbe. What do you all feel about it? The roads and rails will be detailed further down the line.

I am gonna get straight to it.

I dont want to work on the capital of Litvania.

I have neither the will or motivation to do it, as i want to spend more time on the more interesting area of Litvania such as the countryside.

I need someone to help me.

Thats all i am asking.

Maybe a new user, who would like to help me?

Well this is embarrassing.. a day after being given a country to look after I seem to have deleted the coastline and flooded the place.. my abject apologies to everyone. Worse still.. because I’m new I’ve no idea how big a problem I’ve caused.. feel free to start throwing things! :(

One of the things I heard back clearly when I last asked for feedback on Dunwic was that my transport system was not as realistic as I wanted it to be. Since then I’ve been trying to fix the bugs and come up with a more realistic system for a city of Dunwic’s size and I’d like to know more about what you think.

Essentially I have reduced the light rail from 7 lines to 2 and transferred some of those lines over to the regional rail network. I have also re-routed lines, gotten rid of duplicating lines and tried to erase all the steep curves from the system.

Here are the maps you can compare side-by-side

Here is the new RM Regio diagram (this only shows the major stops)

What more can I do? Is the new arrangement more realistic?

Although there are a few amazing articles in the wiki, there are also a LOT of stubs, unfinished, deprecated, abandoned, confusing and unreadable articles … plus multiple templates. Has anyone got ideas how we could improve the quality and generally make it something more like the real wikipedia? At the moment it is just growing more and more arms without getting any more believable, or coherent - in fact, just the opposite, despite some valiant attempts.

Ideas?

Happy mapping Udi

Luciano’s monthly challenges have helped us all focus our mapping efforts on a particular aspect of the task.

As a compliment to this, I will be starting a series of mini-tasks to bring some suggestions for your maps, and when I say mini, it really is no more than a few minutes’ work - hence the ‘Coffee Break Construction’.

As one seasonal song put it ‘so here it is…’

December 2016 CBC:

Create a music venue in your city. It could be anything from a huge international venue, a historic concert hall or a tiny backstreet jazz club. OSM doesn’t have a specific concert hall icon, so either use ‘theatre’ or ‘bar’ for small venues serving drinks. Consider the clientele and styles of music being performed. Will there need to be access for roadies in large trucks? Are there shops and bars within large venues?

Share links to your creations below. Happy mapping!

Since OGF’s world history is often retroactive and spotty, why not use countries (and their wiki pages) that have been abandoned as sources of ancient history or ‘lost civilizations’?

For instance, before Picard was removed, I speculated that some of their culture migrated across Tarephia into Drevet & Wustesonne (my territories). Just like in real-world history, civilizations rise and fall all the time. So, whomever claims what was Picard, they could either make references to the previous country in their history or forge their own backstory.
