Hello everyone hope you had a nice day. So lately I’ve been making some progress on Pasalia but always thought there must be something I’m missing. Turns out I think I’m lacking a general concept for it so far. Now, after some hours of thinking about that, I further realised to have created a small problem (that turned out to help my idea) . Sooo… I first started mapping in german but then changed to english, so i then came up with the idea of making my country bi-lingual (think real life the french speaking part of canada) but here it would be my capital region speaking german and the rest Ingerish. Any of you got any tips or opinions on that? Second and maybe the most interesting thought I had so far. One thing I can tell is that I’m really having some ‘nostalgia’ for 1950s north america (aka the US). Now I was thinking how it would be possible to design a modern day 2016 country that is culturally still somewhat stuck in the 1950s (E.g: obviously having modern day tech but driving 50s-design influenced cars and being a bit living their culture, without all the racism, discrimination and generell weirdness and having modern day buildings but with a bit of ‘‘googie-architecture’, google it if you want to know) So after this oddly long post What are your thoughts on this, admittedly strange, idea? Any thoughts or ideas or critiscm? greetings, kingfries (who still wonders how he came up with this )

A year ago, the OGF community helped produce translations of our About page into German, Spanish, French, Dutch and Polish.

Since that time, we’ve made some big changes to the English version, in an effort to make the rules of OGF clearer and the steps for new users easier to follow.

So if anyone could help update the translations of the About page to match the current English version (or produce a good translation for another widely spoken language) we’d appreciate your efforts enormously. With all the formatting involved, it’s probably easiest to simply copy/paste the entire wiki code from the English page, and start from there.

If you’re interested, feel free to comment below or jump right in. Many thanks for your help!

When I started remodeling my capital city, I isolated some components (the embassies, for example) and saved them as separate osm files so I could put them back once I found a spot for them in the ‘new’ city.

However, since the replacements are the same version number as the originals that were deleted, JOSM pitches a fit about data-set synchronization when I upload; the message “your version is version 1, server has version 2”. Conflict resolution is slow because I can’t get JOSM to download all the desynced data at once (I get a read timed out error if I try to synchronize the entire data-set, which I sometimes get on normal data downloads from the server), so I have to sync each each conflict individually.

Is there a faster way around this issue? I have more things I plan on restoring in this manner and would like the process to go a bit quicker. :)

A while ago I described my (new) here-and-there mapping strategy. I still like it, jumping from small-scale general landscape design to large-scale details. Here’s one more example for the “details” part of it: Grümer Peninsula including many details for the small town of Elzburg, which is located at one of the northern termini of Rekant S-Bahn (suburban rail) network.

Happy mapping! joschi81

for my country Eureisia. I been rattling my brain for the longest in creating one that I’ve seen many users made. Can one create it using MS Paint to make the elevations, colors and whatnot. I have been making a big terrain like land via Sketchup, saved it as a 2d image and wanting to trace it via pencil and paper and transfer it to a paint program.

Maybe I’m asking my own question.

Any ideas?

Here’s attached.

Thanks, JBStad1

P.S. Since I don’t know what I’m doing in uploading images, I decided to show it via Flickr!

Hey fellow mappers; in the last days I’ve started on yet another city in Kojo; the city of Yoyomi and its immediate surroundings.

The city’s development is slightly inspired by the historic development of my home town, Cologne. There are a few parallels visible I think, but it is on no way supposed to be a clone of any kind. I’ve placed some mock-place-names in German, which I associate with certain types of neighbourhoods from here, but they will definitely change since they are only small notes for me; so don’t worry about them for now please ;)

With this mapping approach I, as I do with Ro, thought about the vague history of the city and the order in which its neighbourhoods grew. But more importantly I started mapping upwards down, that means I only mapped general landuse for now and the absolute core infrastructure; neighbourhood development will only take place when I finished the overall layout. That might seem obvious, but is actually quite a step forward for me since I sometimes even used to start working on little neighbourhoods before having thought about how big the city is even supposed to be xD

Hi everyone, I was thinking about some important historical dates for my country Pasalia and one of them is the launch of the first satellite. Now I was asking myself how this whole matter of Rocket Launches is supposed to be handled. Would be great to hear from others if they intend on having something like that or if there are any international agreements on this matter?

I recently wondered if there’s a possibility of getting all nodes and ways of an area or tile via entering a specific url like “www.opengeofiction.net/api/0.6/gettiles/{zoom}/{x}/{y}” The resulting data output format should be xml, e.g. Way 24084 (www.opengeofiction.net/api/0.6/way/24084)

I have no knowledge of servers and all the stuff around it, so maybe someone can help me?

I am grateful for every answer. Bstn

I’ve been recently editing more. The capital city, Aŭstraĉerfubo, is still in developing and I have new ideas around another cities like Delta Insulo and Hesperico Marborda, and another new ideas around the geography, inspired in the comments of the last diary entry. So now it is time for a new diary entry, still focusing in natural geography, but now trying to figure out some more human aspects.

Lets start with the actual state of editions: res It may left so many things, such as an airport, the industrial areas and ports. From now I announce that the ferry routes are open from the capital to another cities at the other side of the strait.

Before continuing, there are many aspects to solve about the island:

Does anyone have any ideas concerning the origins of Communism and/or Fascism? How did it come about? Were there any alliances between these countries, like the Axis or the Warsaw Pact? Were there any countries ‘central’ to the ideology, like Nazi Germany or the USSR? How and why did the ideologies fall? Are there still some fascist/communist states around?

I’m leaving this as an open-ended discussion as this is a broad topic. It would be great to hear different ideas on this topic. I’m especially curious to find out whether this follows a path similar to the modern world, i.e. powerblocs, or whether it arose differently.

Hello fellow mappers!

In order to inform everyone I decided to write this here, so everyone knows it’s there and could use it if they want.

I found myself - and clearly many other users too - missing some infoboxes about things we love to write about most, like public transportation and wars. I did create them immediately in my best way possible, and here they are. And there will be more coming soon.

The Port infobox is made for ports already existing on the Harbour page. Since there is a lot of attention for air traffic, which already has an comprehensive infobox, this should make seaports more interesting to write about. As the documentation is not ready yet, an example is available here.

The Mass Transit infobox was a largely missed one looking at various diary posts, resulting into alternatives like images as infobox or no infobox at all. Since Public Transit was already used and I don’t know who makes use of it, it’s called Mass transit.

As a nice finishing touch, the infobox it’s colors are customizable, so that it could fit the logo or such so it’s more pleasing to the eye. Note that this is only optional. Read the documentation for more information about how to use it, although it’s quite easy to use.

The Military conflict infobox was a nightmare to make. To make it look like the one on Wikipedia, the width of the columns had to be adjusted. Since all infobox columns are made equal by the stylesheet (a code page that tells how everything on the wiki should look), I had to be very creative to solve this, but it worked and now it’s there, looking like it’s big wikipedia brother, but completely build for OGF-use from scratch. It could be used to describe all your conflicts, wars, battles, etc. already there on the Wars and Conflicts page. The information in the preview of this infobox are just placeholders. Please read the documentation for more information how to use it.

I was thinking of how i could better my structural interpretation on how cities, suburbs, towns, and villages are made. I’ve been looking at the structure of cities like Chennai in India and London in Great Britain, and the structure of villages in parts of Africa, America, China, etc. And i’ve been looking at the road structure of that of small towns, and suburbs. How does a village develop into a town, and from a town into a city with time? Do they tear down roads and rebuild them to better suit their needs? (That’s just how i think they do it) I need tips (or help) to understand HOW they do it.

Hello, I’m the owner of a territory named Vinnmark, located on the southeastern coast of the Vinn Sea. I’m building the new capital city, Berles, a city inspired by the cities of Amsterdam and Brussels, but as I’m a new user, I would like you to help me building it. I’ve read many articles about realistic cities but my cities always look like a bunch of non-sense streets, mostly because I don’t make good motorways and that kind of. … Would you like to help me building some streets, just streets in the city of Berles? Pre-Word

I am 232 edits in and it has been a while since I posted a ‘trailings of a beginner’ post, but I may just rename this series to ‘update’ or ‘Legendardisch Progress’ series in the future, but for now, Trailings of a beginner will do. Last time I let you go with a view of the Central Station of Endeavour and the town of Reinoud. What has changed since then??

Endeavour

The biggest grower I think is the city of Endeavour. Just take a look

Overview

We have some parks and the city on Middel Eilandt has grown. You can also see the border of the Autonomous City Regions or Stadsdelen (Admin # 3 = state, 4 = water boards, 5 = Municipal, 6 = Autonomous City Region OR town/village etc)

So Endeavour is a city in the state of Staats-Stad in Legendardisch with 3 auto. city regions, Middel Eilandt, Haeven and Arend.

Anyway, I am planning out the harbor, its not final but a rough… sketch?

I have recently been working on the city of Känton, http://opengeofiction.net/#map=12/52.1208/111.0096 and a few issues have sprung up which are related to more general mapping practices. Känton is a small city founded in the late medieval period which is an important academic, scientific, religious and tourist centre as well as being an increasingly important business hub. The city is turning out more British than I’d originally planned it, being based on Oxford, Durham, Bristol and Bath but with a bit of Hanover too. It is far from complete yet of course.

Firstly, what exactly is defined as a suburb as opposed to a locality or neighbourhood? I have been given every village-sized area between main roads a suburb names, because it’s likely they would have been villages before the city expanded.

Secondly, can I show the suburban railway line out to the airport as under construction? The airport has only been expanding recently and the line is not completed yet. Are the stations too close together? The line running north to the west of the city will probably go into a tunnel for a good part of its route.

Is the river bifurcation accurate? I have the Majos and the Camin both split shortly before they meet - would this really happen? Is the way the channels have been straightened realistic?

Are the streets an accurate block size for a fourteenth- to eighteenth-century city centre? Am I putting the split carriageways of roads far enough apart?

Should I give the city a tramway network? It already has buses and an S-Raud (suburban railway) and is quite hilly with heritage streets that residents would object to having overhead wires on. On the other hand, Karolians like trams, congestion is a problem, the railways do not really serve the city centre and the city council is affluent enough to afford more public transport.

Most of you have probably heard of QUARTA, Quentinsburgh, Freedemia’s transit system.

One of the nicest things about my city in my opinion is the subway system, as I’ve managed to make a system that seems to make sense and works with the bus system and major corridors as well. I imagine the area to be very transit focused as Freedemia continues to move away from car travel in favor of transit. (slowly. But surely)

One of the hardest things though was the metro map. For the time being I was able to use Google Drawings to create a somewhat visually pleasing map that covers the entire system (just showing basic lines). current map I’m mostly satisfied with it too. Considering what I used and the lack of stations on the map, it looks pretty good for an overview map. I even made a night service version.
