Hello! I’m having a blast with my new hobby here at OGF. I’m doing something a bit different, but in the end the mapping in OGF and wiki work ends up the same. It’s a marriage of my long-term hobby and the new one here at OGF, so I just wanted to share the side you wouldn’t have seen without sharing it here.

Because it also uses real-life scale for all its features, I’m using the game Cities Skylines to hand-map out each city - all its roads, buildings, features etc, and then use an overhead screenshot as a JOSM background image to map into OGF step by step. That ensures I’ve got the scale right, but it more importantly allows me to first design, edit, rethink (and demolish and build all over again), all the parts of the city and landscape, and then verify it all functions like a normal city before mapping it into OGF.

I’m doing it in stages, because I want to do both OGF mapping and Cities at the same time. Here are some shots of the first stage of the city in 3D and the first mapping traced back into OGF. I’ve even modeled the Caladean flag into the game, because why not?

In case anyone wants to know how I did this, in short it was this: - Took an image of an 18km x 18km section of my capital city’s intended location in OGF - Used an overlay mod in Cities to project a semitransparent png of that 18km x 18km section from OGF - Used map editor to create the terrain - Build the first neighborhoods of the city - Screenshot from overhead and used that as a JOSM background - Rinse, wash and repeat for each expansion of the area I’m mapping

I love creating maps like this all by hand, every curve of every road, so to have two places where I have that much mapping freedom is awesome.

Hey All, I don’t know if anybody else is having trouble with the wiki but it seems to be down for me. I don’t know if it’s local but I’d know it’s not if everybody else has a problem…as it goes :P I’ve got an error saying this exactly;

“Internal error - OpenGeoFiction(wiki?)

[75db9a2ba08f7e2051f974de] 2017-07-13 11:47:00: Fatal exception of type “DBUnexpectedError” “

So yeah, is anybody else having trouble or know if it’s local to me? I can be patient but I was editing an article, so I am not.

Thanks in advance

Hi All I am truly sorry for distrupting the user diaries with short posts every now and then. I have brought it down to this: Either have a seperate website to post my updates to or you’d just view my profile for it, I am not sure about how I can cut down on the posts, maybe you can tell me what I should do. Should I put my progress on a site or in a video, or just make my profile a place to see what i’ve done.

Along the last week’s, I saw a lot of crossed accusations between “young” or “inexperienced” users and the consolidated users of our community. (Because althoughit seems like not, I read almost every thing that is wrote, not only in the User Diaries, also in the Blikis). And is because of it, and because I’m a member of these community and I love it, I think we should reflect about what is for us OGF and how we show it to the people. When I arrived here three years ago, I was thirteen, and I saw OGF like a game, a way to get funny and build giant empires like in “Age of Empires”, but today I have a really different vision of that place.

Along these threeyears I have get a notable improvement of my cartography, but also a “mental improvement” Actually for me OGF is an “artistic project” a way to express the things that I like the most (the architecture, the urbanism, the history, the geography…), a way to “disconnect from reality” and get some fun and also a place for see different points of view from great people.

Compared with other usuaries, I’ve got “less time” for develop my mapping, and I wouldlike to can carry out more collaborative projects like the one I’ve got few monthsago whit the Uuser Click, but because my situation in the map,isn’t easy.

Where I want to go is: ¿what is the vision that when show to all of OGF? We need to consider that we are in the XXI century, so there are kids like me that have born in the digital era and therefore, we should be able to deal with the perfil of “kid with 13~16 years old with a lot of time and a lot of arrogance, because with the time,it would be the most common.

I’ve decided to use up the empty space and make towns, I have created Windham in one of the enclaves. I’m thinking it would have about 100,000 people living there, some old history of Planoria owning some of the land surrounding the enclaves, and some kind of city square to remember who protected Windham and Alligator Pond from enemy forces. http://opengeofiction.net/#map=18/-47.00169/65.51532 Second one in location

Hello, fellow mappers.

I’m writing this to warn you that I’ve got new plans for Vinnmark.

First of all, I’m creating a big bay just like Lake IJsselmeer in the Netherlands, which will include an island in it.

I’m also changing the frontiers as I don’t like how Vinnmark looks on the map, so I’ll cut off some parts of it and keep them as ‘unclaimed territories’ so other neighbouring countries can claim them as part of their territory or either someone wants to make them his own country.

Lake Laika is going to be swollen by the sea so that the future city of Odense (which will be similar to Rotterdam in its structure) will be connected to the sea.

I’ve decided to officially fix my blue country territory and take a break from my official territory. This comes after a message from admin and a comment on my ‘Area for Sale’ Joke: Area For Sale! (Just A Joke). I hope that my blue country neighbors will be satisfied with me fixing it.

P.S Thanks wangi for inspiring me to do it. I will make it as realistic as possible.

Hi all,

Surprisingly I was the winner of last week’s “Weekly Word” challenge, although “military” is not really a subject I focus on in OGF. As niels20020 mentioned, the winner will from now on have the right to announce the next weekly word.

The new Weekly Word is

Electricity

Looking forward to receiving your entries. Please comment and mention your creations that in your point of view fit to the subject. Deadline is next Saturday 18:00 GMT.

Johannes

PS: @niels20020: The Weekly Word “mini challenge” is a very nice idea, in my point of view. Thank you!

Hello fellow mappers, Whilst being in the very first steps of planning a (rail-) Trip across europe I had an idea. For those not familiar,an Interrail pass is a railpass bought mostly by Young people which enables them to travel by train all over Europe for cheap. Youre standing at the Station and See a train that goes somewhere you like. You fill in the station you are currently at, the one you are headed to and Just get on the train. The ogf-world seems to be working together slightly better than the real one, so why not introduce the Worldtravel-Pass (better name TBA?), which would enable the buyer to travel by rail and ferry all over the world instead of only one continent. There will still be cheaper versions of this only valid for one continent/Region or the more expensive one for the whole world. This could run under the World Tourism Organisation I assume. Now, realistically, Not every country can participate or wants to. But even nations which don’t focus much on rail travel (my own included) or small island nations can offer Discounts for local bus/ferry etc. Services aswell as 10% discounts in hostels. Does this Sound too optimistic? Could be implemented in the wiki article as a table where you add your country and tick off the Services offered (Rail/Ferry/Urban transport/hostel & Museum discounts) using the Red/yellow/green symbols known from other articles. Looking forward to hearing your opinions. -Kingfries

I have been thinking recently about the Grand Lake area in Gobrassanya, and i have been especially thinking of Grand Lake as an Ingerish-speaking City, and Quesagnais as a Franquese-speaking city.

Today, i spotted some streets in Quesagnais that had Ingerish names.

Should i replace those names with Franquese ones?

I just wrote my very first bliki celebrating my one year on OGF! It features:

• Emotional stories about my geofiction passion;

• A guide for building an imaginary European city;

• A complex timeline of mappings I did this year;

• A detailed description of the reconstruction project of the city of Vâlcești;

• Two song tips;

• Lame jokes.

Please don’t forget to leave a nice comment in the comment section. Thanks!
