Hi all,

Just thought I’d update you on the progress of Sarit. Here’s a little background for if you are wondering:

Sarit is the regional city of the region of Barkenfry (Holmic: Bakenfray) in Eastern Bromley.

The region that Sarit sits in has been part of a dispute over being recognised as an independent state (A bit like the Catalonia debate in Spain). The region is home to many Holmic and Sanmarquino migrants who have shaped the infrastructure and design of the roads so therefore this has fueled the debate. The right-wing government that leads Bromley believes in the unification of Bromley and gave an alternative Ingerish-derived name, Sarkton, which is the name used by the rest of Bromley’s regions.

Now you’ve had a bit of background, here’s the plans:

  • Sarit follows a mixture between British and European city designs. If you have a look, you can see Sarit Cathedral, or Karmeli safe-Sarit as it is known by the locals with the many pedestrian streets surrounding it. As a Brit myself, this is an uncommon occurrence and soforth fits in with a European style, please if you disagree feel free to comment!

  • I’ve tried to make the main roads look a bit curvy to fit in with the British style of mapping

  • Does anyone think that the British-styled roads conflict a bit with the European-styled roads (the grid roads)?

Thanks :)

An entry like this is better suited as an entry for my (extremely sporadic) bliki, but the OGF wiki has been a game of roulette for me in recent days. Half the time it loads after taking about three minutes, or more. The rest of the time, it doesn’t load at all. So here’s the general just of Holdwell, in a diary entry.

Holdwell is economically above-average urbanised suburb of Glaster’s capital, Wyndham. It hosts a quite pleasant and well-developed [town centre] (https://opengeofiction.net/#map=18/52.17624/129.39069), and a railway station with regional services and also some national services. The waterfront has seen redevelopment as industry has shifted further north and east, away from the town.

South of the town centre there is the Holdwell Sanitorium, an area currently being redeveloped into student accommodation. On the other side of National Way lie the Westriver Estates, a classic, brutalist-era housing complex.

In the north you find more monotonous, but more pleasant suburbs, along with Holdwell and Sanford station, the second railway station in the area. Further north is the yet-unmapped locality of Sanford. Sanford Southern Dock is the southernmost point of industry on the west bank of the River Holder.

Any comments on the area, or on the general structure of Wyndham are appreciated! I’m particularly interested at this early stage, because the general groundwork has been laid out, but no detailed mapping has taken place yet. This way it’s a lot easier to fix large-scale structural problems.

Happy mapping!

Okay - I’m officially taking it on. Wow!

But now Enkalang sounds too Malay to me,

Kalango? Agolide? (Chichewa for “golden”) Zabaria…?

I’ve decided main native language will be “Chechiwa”: largely parallel to rw Chichewa.

Digging into my Chichewa dictionary tomorrow!

Hi Everyone,

I am going to be going on hiatus because of this reason: school. My school is dumping lots of work on me, so I really don’t have any free time. This means I am going to be gone until next year, so If I get ejected from my country, that will be why. If I do, I have had a lot of fun working on the Nahele Republic, and I will miss it dearly. Thank you all for understanding, and I hope to see you some time again.

I envision this nation as a sort of South Africa/Moçambique/Zimbabwe hybrid, a “savage” land settled by (mostly) Ingerish-speaking colonists 100 or so years ago. Land holds vast mineral wealth, but was not effectively exploited until the last 50 years when technology made extraction easier.
Government is classic Plunderocracy. Tribal government (patterned loosely on Malawi’s Tribal Authority system) exists as a puppet in concert with repressive colonial government - coastal settlements are primarily colonial and reap the benefits of lucrative trade in minerals, while the mostly native population inland exists in poverty and slowly burns with decades of injustice and accumulating anger. A powderkeg, really.
Native language will borrow liberally from Lingala, Bamwe and Chichewa. Most bigger inland settlements will have both a native and colonial name.
Climate will fit what has already been mapped and what is adjacent: drier inland, resembling Somalia’s thorn forests - wetter and jungled on the coast - with belts of food producing areas as well. And of course sprawling mines all over the central part of the country (see graphic).
I envision that relations with Arataran will be favorable, but other nearby countries will undoubtedly have issues with the horrible human rights situation here, and things might be a bit strained.
What is mapped already has a LOT of references to England and the US, I’m not sure if I have to stick with that or if it’s permitted to change the names that are there. Accordingly, I don’t have a name picked yet - I was thinking New Victoria if I have to keep Port Victoria as the capital. Otherwise, I’m leaning toward an Ingerish-ized version of the Chichewa word “Nkhalango” which translates to “jungle fortress”: so something like “Enkalang”.

Also… might be more interesting to have some other non-Ingerish colonial influence as well. Get some Praia and Plage names in there! So many possibilities!

Hello, I’ve been mapping for close to two months here and I am enjoying it a lot, I used to map before that but in a more amateur way.

The Country I am mapping is Aden in Tarephia, I would love for you to give me feedback about it. I’ve planned mostly everything and I am finishing the overall mapping of the provinces one by one, the only province that’s mapping is done (without details) is Nadal, if you check it out and give me feedback, it would make my day.

If you want, you can check my wiki page too, I’ve written a cute history about the country with pictures and all that you would like!

Thanks!

Hey.

Out of curiosity, how often are the tiles updated? They appear to not be updating… completely, that is. Both TopoMap and Histor are updated from zooms 10 to 13, and Histor has appeared to be partially updated at zoom 19, but standard OGF hasn’t appeared to have updated its tiles on any zoom for the past few hours.

Hi all

If you have a look at Bromley, you’ll be able to see the borders that sude has kindly placed for me because I can’t do borders to save my life.

The border has been altered slightly to make it look more interesting as it was very straight and a bit too ordered originally.

Below is a summary of V2.0 and V2.01:

V2.0: -Brand new borders drawn -All or the vast majority of horrible mapping has been deleted

V2.01: -Vast majority of capital cities of regions placed -Main road linking major cities drawn out as a schematic to help with planning -A slight addition to Ulyaromorsk/Umbersea in Westrange to help with planning the west of the country

We are currently devising a regional language which ties in with Ohemian and that should be done soon.

Bromley has joined the Jolantian family of languages as a minority language along with the Holmic language family to create a diverse speaking country.

Any questions feel free to ask!

Recently I have been trying to expand and detail power generation and transmission infrastructure (as well as some industrial areas).

I am not from an area with many power lines, and I am not very familiar with the best practices for how to set them up: i.e what Voltages to use and where, how many circuits, lines, where do I put substations, what is the typical land density of power lines, what do maintenance facilities look like, etc.

I have started in a few places like: https://opengeofiction.net/edit#map=14/-40.3279/160.4383 https://opengeofiction.net/#map=15/-39.8130/159.9072 https://opengeofiction.net/#map=15/-39.9406/159.7498

But if anyone has any expertise or resources regarding power infrastructure, it would be greatly appreciated, as well as any feedback on the little bits I have mapped thus far.

Hi All,

My current focus in mapping is Tavauru’s capital, Faiai’ita here: https://opengeofiction.net/#map=14/10.4808/86.5392

Tavauru is loosely based on island nations in the Caribbean, Reunion, Mauritius, Tahiti, Fiji etc.

I would love some feedback on my mapping and how realistic Faiai’ita is compared to those places. Faiai’ita is still a work in progress so I do appreciate what you have to say.

Faiai’ita is my best attempt at urban mapping so far (I’m not too happy with my first attempt at a city (Raiangua) which is less detailed).

Hi all!

My territory Former Unionist Colony of Bromley (Bromley for short) will be going through some major work over the next period.

After some friendly feedback and suggestions from Sude - owner of San Marcos - we have devised a work in progress plan for the country.

Apparently my country is the size of Honduras instead of the UK which I thought so we might be inspired by the layout of roads and terrain from that.

We have discussed two languages which are being used by various countries at the moment, Ohemian and Holmic and these will be brought in in some way to allow a diverse country which actually sits right in the middle of the Ohemian and Holmic speaking regions.

We would also like to make the whole country look a lot more natural by reducing major roads so that it is a lot less overcrowded. This resulted in Bromley having one of the highest populations and population densities in Antarephia, which I did think was a bit strange and have now realised why it’s so strange!

So let’s bring on Bromley 2.0!!!

Here is the plan that sude has devised, any feedback would be greatly appreciated! https://i.ibb.co/R3GP4gV/image.png

Thank you

Hello everyone!

Currently, I am using a Chromebook, so I am primarily relying on the iD editor, which we all know does not have as many cool features as JOSM. But now, I am saving up for a PC that runs Windows 10. That means I am going to finally be able to use JOSM!

So, this is where I need your help: What tools should I add to begin using JOSM fully? I heard that the Building Tool is very essential and have seen it from a few tutorials to begin JOSM, but those tools only showed me how to setup JOSM, and also add buildings. So, what tools do you guys use to easily edit in JOSM. I am excited to start using it!

Hello there. Today is the 15th (or the 16th), which is time for another mapping challenge for this month!

I quite like the responses so far for the previous challenge. If you want, you can take a look at some of the interesting entries there.

Mapper’s Challenge #31 — August 2020 — Green Cities and Neighbourhoods

This challenge is partly inspired by Cities: Skylines Green Cities DLC, plus also some videos I have watched regarding ‘ideal cities’ and efforts made to make their cities more eco-friendly. (see this video, for example.)

Hence, I decided to launch this exciting challenge for all who are considering creating a ‘model neighbourhood’ or ‘model town’. Make it stand out from the rest, like having dedicated cycling routes, solar-powered plant, parks, etc. Gobras City of Gobrassanya has some ‘ecotowns’ as well, such as here or here.

There are a few levels for this challenge:

  • Beginner: A small neighbourhood
  • Intermediate: A small section of your town/city
  • Advanced: A whole town, or a significant section of your city

I am looking forward to seeing what innovations your neighbourhood/city can come up with to make the place enjoyable and pleasant to live in and remain carbon-neutral at the same time.

Have a blessed month, and happy mapping!
