One of the things I heard back clearly when I last asked for feedback on Dunwic was that my transport system was not as realistic as I wanted it to be. Since then I’ve been trying to fix the bugs and come up with a more realistic system for a city of Dunwic’s size and I’d like to know more about what you think.

Essentially I have reduced the light rail from 7 lines to 2 and transferred some of those lines over to the regional rail network. I have also re-routed lines, gotten rid of duplicating lines and tried to erase all the steep curves from the system.

Here are the maps you can compare side-by-side

Here is the new RM Regio diagram (this only shows the major stops)

What more can I do? Is the new arrangement more realistic?

Although there are a few amazing articles in the wiki, there are also a LOT of stubs, unfinished, deprecated, abandoned, confusing and unreadable articles … plus multiple templates. Has anyone got ideas how we could improve the quality and generally make it something more like the real wikipedia? At the moment it is just growing more and more arms without getting any more believable, or coherent - in fact, just the opposite, despite some valiant attempts.

Ideas?

Luciano’s monthly challenges have helped us all focus our mapping efforts on a particular aspect of the task.

As a compliment to this, I will be starting a series of mini-tasks to bring some suggestions for your maps, and when I say mini, it really is no more than a few minutes’ work - hence the ‘Coffee Break Construction’.

As one seasonal song put it ‘so here it is…’

December 2016 CBC:

Create a music venue in your city. It could be anything from a huge international venue, a historic concert hall or a tiny backstreet jazz club. OSM doesn’t have a specific concert hall icon, so either use ‘theatre’ or ‘bar’ for small venues serving drinks. Consider the clientele and styles of music being performed. Will there need to be access for roadies in large trucks? Are there shops and bars within large venues?

Since OGF’s world history is often retroactive and spotty, why not use countries (and their wiki pages) that have been abandoned as sources of ancient history or ‘lost civilizations’?

For instance, before Picard was removed, I speculated that some of their culture migrated across Tarephia into Drevet & Wustesonne (my territories). Just like in real-world history, civilizations rise and fall all the time. So, whomever claims what was Picard, they could either make references to the previous country in their history or forge their own backstory.

It seems to be the month for asking feedback on a particular area, so here’s my request:

I have been working on Känton for nearly a year and the street grid is practically complete. What I am interested in is your comments on the provision of facilities. Do I need more schools, hospitals, police stations, supermarkets, etc? Are there any significant buildings I’ve overlooked? Are the various ‘webs’ of residential cul-de-sacs at a realistic scale?

The city is very ‘intellectual-economy’-based but should there be more industry?

Even considering the city is ‘car-unfriendly’, should there be more parking? Or more out-of-town park and ride areas? I am not happy with the University junction 4 - how could this be remodelled?

Is the S-Raud depot big enough or should another one be built elsewhere (there is a small depot at Arpeiva)? What about the bus depot? Is the curve too tight for mainline trains?

Karolia is one of the least religious countries in the world - should there be more churches?

Does the topography seem right? The city’s lowest level is around 50-60m above sea level, so are the hills realistically high? Is an incline needed around the Haaluptee area to explain the large meander?

Finally, the population of the greater metropolitan area (so not just the city proper, but Kasmila, Taasialinn, Jorvaraanta and other satellite towns is supposed to be 530,000. Does this seem realistic? There is a lot of building and planning going on to expand greenfield and brownfield sites in the suburbs.

I am aware there are a lot more streets to name…

So I was editing the history section of my country, and I wondered, how to make a history in OpenGeofiction?

What about empires, do I make them up, or do I make realistic empires that have existed before or something?

I also noticed earlier that my land used to be a province in a country called Picard, do I note them too? On another note, I was curious, what happened to this country?

Hello everyone!

I was mapping and assigning names to places or roads ; and I wondered : are there any important or famous people (significant figures like heroes, politicians, celebrities…) in OGF world ; and may their names be given to streets, roads… ? (like in the real world)

Thanks for your answers!

Responding to Luciano’s challenge, I would like to know a bit more what other mappers think about this area. The map is obviously far from complete - and there are still relics of earlier experiments there - but, all in all, what in this city is wrong? What should I focus on deleting and reworking?

For background, there is info in the Kėzėpölān wiki, but all this is tentative (especially the economic stuff). The main points may be:

  • cool climate

  • very limited private car ownership

  • focus on family life and education

  • commitment to ‘self-sufficiency’ in food production, wide use of marine resources

  • commitment to hi-technology and industry

  • commitment to development of sports and arts

you can of course critique these as well.

I guess last month’s challenge was a little bit lame - and of course, because of my travels I did not participate. If anyone did something interesting with coastlines, I’d be interested to see - sorry if I missed it.

As most of you know, I’ve been agonizing over Mahhal’s verisimilitude quite a bit - mainly climate, but also sociological factors, population, etc. I’ll post some more detailed thoughts about that later, probably to my newly-redeveloped “bliki” rather than to my diaries here - I’m going to try to keep my diary entries to more “community focused” things, like these monthly challenges.

Luciano’s Mapper’s Challenge #9 - December, 2016 - Oops

This month’s challenge is about mistakes. We all have made many mistakes, in OGF. Maybe because we were still learning. Maybe because we ran with an idea we later regret. Maybe because we just got bored with the way things were working out in an area, and we left it unfinished. A lot of times, we just kind of move on to other projects, because of the amount of time we invested in that “mistake” makes us hesitate to delete it or start over. We feel regret, but we don’t do anything about it.

So let’s “clean up” some big mistake. Frankly, there are whole countries that might be charitably classified as mistakes. If you are really confident that you have made no mistakes, then I envy you, but I still hope you accept this challenge - you can clean up someone else’s mistake (with their permission, of course, or for stuff abandoned by past users). Please don’t invest in Commonia, however, since that large territory is slated for major changes, and investing energy there is probably a bad idea.

I have made a blank map of the Great Sothern Island. Part of the Harda Archipelago, is the island where Semer Republic and Aŭstrasuno Tero are.

the map

I made it first downloading all the coastline data from OGF in JOSM, there was a need to filer it using the search options in JOSM (natural=coastline selected). All those filtered data, which should be the coastline and the administrative borders, where copied and pasted in the same position into a new layer in JOSM, then I exported it to a .gpx file. Using the aplication gpx2svg I converted the .gpx file to a .svg one. Once converted, I used Inkscape to read the .svg and then exporting the final draw to a .png file. This was made using Linux, I don’t know if there is a way to do it in Windows or Mac, but there should be (if not, try Linux, it is free :D !).

This is a blank map, it is an example of how to get blank maps easily.
