Lately I tried to re-edit the boundary between Cameron and Ghranata states in Unesia.

It had been a year since I first made the boundaries, so I re-read the tutorial on Administrative Boundaries. It seemed pretty straightforward, yet after several attempts, the [boundary] ( http://opengeofiction.net/way/7888313) didn’t [render] ( http://opengeofiction.net/#map=8/-30.761/166.179).

Another weird thing is that the boundary showed up in JOSM, but not iD. I didn’t notice any breaks in the way, and the end nodes are all connected to the adjacent ways in the relations. I also checked for duplicate ways and found none, so I don’t know what the problem is. Maybe it’s something obvious I’m overlooking, but I can’t see it.

Can anyone help with this?

The OGF planet is even more industrialised than the real world, even though only half the world has been mapped so far. It is thus inevitable that the problems of worldwide climate change, air pollution and fossil fuel shortages would likely be even more advanced than in real life. Whilst we can expect there to be a comparable battle of words and politics going on between governments, the green movement, the oil and auto industries and private citizens, it seems likely that efforts to tackle these problems would be at a different stage to the real world - hopefully more advanced. Either way, the likely state of the world is that oil is getting more expensive as it runs out, and this is going to have the biggest impact on transport.

With this in mind, how advanced is the cycling culture and provision in your country, specifically your cities? It is going to be almost inevitable that citizens are economically pushed towards both electric cars and bikes, and enlightened and democratic governments are going to realise the latter is the better choice to encourage. As a keen cyclist myself, I’ve started mapping in much greater detail the urban cycling provision of Karolia, which is at an almost Netherlands-like level (with somewhat less exclusion of motor vehicles from the city centres, but deliberately limited car parking vs adequate bike parking) and with a comparable cycling culture where cars are seen as a secondary option to be used on longer journeys or when heavy items must be carried. By contrast, perhaps your territory has a piecemeal provision that makes some cheap fixes but overall still favours cars, or is an outright hostile environment for anyone not driving.

Hello,

I’m relatively new to OGF and only started developing my own country a few months ago. I recently began my country’s capital city and now have made an area suitable for embassies. If anyone in interested please feel free to drop in and make one.

If you require more information about my country or anything really please send me a message

Many thanks, Tommypoo

After much deliberation and discussion, I have taken on the task of drawing up a list of Ingerish monarchs to help further flesh out Ingerland and it’s empire. Also coming will be information on the Ingerish Commonwealth and the Ingerish Games (a version of the RL Commonwealth Games that involves ~53 countries around the world)

Given that a page listing any monarchs is likely to affect a very large number of you out there, I wanted to avoid any conflicts and duplication. So if anyone has already named an Ingerish monarch in the history of their own country, please let me know. That way, I can make every endeavour to incorporate it into the list.

The list of monarchs will use English-sounding names, that are era appropriate, and attempt avoid clashing with RL monarchs wherever possible.

Stay tuned for a list on the wiki in the coming days :)

I started on OpenGeofiction about a week and a bit ago, and while I waited for my territory-requesting period, I decided to make a city from scratch. It was a little confusing where I could build until someone sent me the overview map. I found an area I wanted and started by building a road that went straight across. I then built many supporting roads to fill in the rest of the area. I built a lighthouse on the northernmost point of the peninsula, and some beaches. Following that, I just built whatever I thought I needed in the city, basing the center-area on my neighborhood. I also added a few artificial islands, Karpen and Kirken island on the west coast. Note how they look extremely unrealistic. I then proceeded to build the Business-Residential area. I placed a Moderate-Sized [or so I thought] blob for a residential area, called it the Jan Mooren Townhouses, and put a massive forest behind it. I did not know about the OGF Scale Helper (http://tile.opengeofiction.net/util/map_scale.html?map=2.466367943172236/11.97132/85.14261&map2=x/36.23664/68.11143&pxpt=0.277&scale=100000000), so I did not think about checking the sizes. I then went east and made a suburban area, using the same size houses for every street in the area, and numbering them intricately. I left it there and worked on something else, until Isleño told me to use the OGF Scale Helper to compare the sizes of my buildings to their real-life counterparts. I checked one of my Suburban houses to a house in real life, and my house was 10 times larger. It was too late to resize them all, so I had to build another one, still near Perkins Point.

Lesson of The Day: Always check the scale of your buildings so they aren’t palaces instead of houses. Also, don’t make your buildings weird shapes just so they fit in between every block.

Hello, everyone. I’m fairly new to this website, and I’ve recently decided to start mapping some things. I just finished working on the downtown area of the city of Alexandria in Mecyna. I added some new streets and buildings, and created a few parks. I’m currently looking for some constructive criticism on this location. If someone could also tell me how to find out more about the region’s Climate and geography, that would be very helpful.

So I have been mapping roads and putting in villages, towns and cities into Utterland with not an awful lot of detail. Yes, I have got some topography put in as well, with hills and rivers and even an estuary and a port. but it is all a bit sketch-mappy. The only places with some degree of detail are my cities of Welle, Solsburg and Galmosen - and even these are still sketchy. I know I was anxious to fill the place, and make it look like a real country. But I’m miles away from that, and I realise that this was one of the pitfalls of OGF. The more sensible approach is probably to stick to one project at a time, one town or city, and work that up into high detail. Patience, it would seem, is a virtue I’ll need to reacquire.

Happy mapping.

I have been mapping Port Mallore off-and-on for over a year now. I don’t think its bad by any means, but after most of the large moves are complete it is now getting a little tiresome. I think the best thing I can do for it at this point is to leave it be and come back after a while with fresher eyes. Anyone else feel this way? Like she and I simply need a break and then we will be happy together again…

Please have a look at the city and if you are so inclined let me know what you think, good AND bad please. I can take it I promise, and I know my work can improve. Please help me do that.

I plan to spend my time now working larger scale, mapping the hydrology, land use, major transport routes, and ample natural splendor for the whole of the island of Mallorjhe including absorbing TA113b and d into a unified landform. (admin has cleared it.) I was thinking of using Puerto Rico as an example but with a little more agriculture and a prominent spine of mountains with an old volcano or two. I am open to suggestions here if you have ideas or advice.

Thanks all, r.s.

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of detailed work in the center of
Musawir . I’ve been feeling OK about the detail work, but the geography of the surrounding cityscape has been a nagging problem. I don’t want to proceed with more detailing if the geographic foundation is too unrealistic.

I originally designed the city about 10-12 years ago and traced it into OGF. The initial concept had the Taswir River spelling the word “Musawir” in the Almukhtaran language as it passed through the city. The city would become a capitol and center of religious knowledge due it’s auspicious location. It’s extreme population density would be the result of people crowding to live near the sacred river and it’s surrounding lakes.

After doing some research, though, I realized that the water volume for the river wouldn’t be nearly enough to justify it’s width. It would need a much larger watershed, extending deep into neighboring territories. Also, I never liked how the river had to run north to go south to Ma’amil.

Eventually I changed to the river into a lake , hoping to solve the volume problem, but that created a new problem: I needed an impervious barrier to keep the water in the lake, so I envisioned the city having a ridge to the south that would be formed of solid granite. That’s fine, but then I needed to justify the shape of the lake, so I figured that the areas the lake filled in were made from weaker soils that over time eroded. But then I would have to construct massive levees to keep the rest of the city from flooding. it seems the more corrections I made, the more problems arose.

I’m hoping that someone can help me with the hydrological aspect of the cityscape so that it can be salvaged in a realistic way. Musawir plays a crucial role in the history of Unesia. If I move it or erase it, the whole country would be affected.

Hi again! So I have something actually started a beach city in the northern peninsula of Fyler Island, in Western Commonia. Got the coast down, made a nice sandy area. But how do you intersect two roads? I’m fairly sure you place a node where you want the intersection and plop in the presets. But whenever I try to put a single node on an already existing way the node acts as connected with the way, and the node will disappear when I press escape. How do I place the node to have it independently of the way? Do I even have to do that? If not, how do I do it?

Anyway, even though I may be a big noob at this software, I am not a noob at the geofiction hobby itself. I have had a fascination with geography as far back as I can remember. I started drawing my own fictional maps around the age of 7. Gradually they became more and more intricate. One day I was watching a youtube video by some really small vlogger talking about his fictional country. In the comments someone linked to opengeofiction.net, and I checked it out and signed up.

In the future, I plan to claim a small cold country in the south, most likely settled by Scandmark or some other power. It is a rich fuse between the culture of the colonizers and the natives. The name could be Aeutia or Navanuq. There will be a few cities with a population of 200,000 or so, but most of the nation would be tiny villages. It will be an analogue to Iceland, Greenland and Northern Canada.

Any advice with my voyage in mapping? Say so in the comments.
