I’ve been mapping it for a relatively short time, but so far I’m not happy with a single addition I make. Everything feels awkward, I don’t know where to place streets anymore, I feel like the scale is completely off and I’m copying the real world too much, everything just looks bad and pails in comparison to my neighbors, etc.

But at this point I really don’t want to delete everything because I know I will give OGF up pretty much instantly afterwards. So I guess I’ll take a break for some time, because my first thought when I think about opening JOSM is “ugghhh, I don’t know what to do,” followed by “well, that was a waste of time.” when pressing upload.

Any advice for what to do to improve or telling me that this is a phase everyone goes through here would be greatly appreciated.

The next word is DISASTER.

I have mentioned this before but I live in Houston and Hurricane Harvey has absolutely destroyed our area, I currently have a family of eight living with my family because their house is still under water. I want the word to be disaster as I want to see how people can either-

  • Build a landscape that will avoid a disaster whether it’s flooding, landslides or earthquakes or even man-made like an abundance of gated neighborhoods because crime was high, or a refugee camp, (this is pretty hard)

  • Map an area that has been affected by a disaster that again could either be man-made. Leowozy already has a great example in Kalae.

Hello, everyone. Today I would like to reintroduce the Mapper’s Challenges to the community. Luciano granted me permission to revive the concept, and I will be running with it for the time being. We’ve had some great work done over the previous twelve challenges, and I think it is worth putting the effort into encouraging good mapping. For me, the Mapper’s Challenges were a great place to experiment, get private feedback, and observe more skilled mappers at work on larger projects. While not every topic will appeal to each user, I would still encourage everyone to give these a quick try. As before, post what you have in the comments below; do not be afraid to provide feedback on submissions also. This is a great place to learn and have fun. It is my hope that we get a chance to see all the good things that users are doing around OGF.

I also want to encourage users to try the “weekly word” challenge! That is a shared, friendly “competition” that is easy to participate in. The monthly Mapper’s Challenges are larger and thus different; their missions do not conflict.

This month’s challenge comes courtesy of a suggestion by Udi before the challenges went on hiatus for a few months.

Mapper’s Challenge #13 - Showing Culture

The challenge for this month is to develop the culture and history of your country by constructing cinemas, theatres, libraries, museums, or other relevant facilities. Add any that are of interest to your country. Names like “Museum of Slavery” or “Library of Communist History” also give hints about a culture. Since culture is more abstract than highways and railways, you will need to be creative and think hard about what your country is like. Then, go for it! Give it a try and see what happens!

There are already a lot of these places popping up in OGF, and many users already have different skill levels on this topic. So I offer a tiered challenge for people to try:

Hi!

I have now been mapping on UL080 for a month. The country is now called Eelanti. The country will be based on Nordic area and Nordic culture (mainly Finnish culture). The official language of Eelanti is Eelandese (which is based on Finnish language).

There are already some basic roads, rivers and railways in Eelanti. Some of them are only drafts and they will be edited to look more realistic.

I have also been mapping the village of Peräkylä. There is still a lot to do in Peräkylä but many areas are already mapped. The central part is mainly quite big apartment buildings and some public buildings. The outer parts will be smaller houses. The odd railway is used by the train factory of Peräkylä (Peräkylän junatehdas in Eelandese).

Because this is the first time I map anything this big, I would like to hear your opinions on my work.

Thanks

Eevee

Hey you guys,

I have not mapped a lot recently, but I was planning to start again. I noticed that the map, or maybe only the standard layer, had an update. Some of the coulours seemed different, nothing too dramatic, but then I saw that most, if not all, of my multipolygon relations that I have mapped before have stopped working. The intended result of the mapping is still visible in the Histor-layer and the Topomap, but have disappeared in the Standard-layer.

For example:

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=16/-45.5707/141.8990 The fortress in Zelem, still standing proud in the Histor-layer and Topomap, but submerged beneath the water in the standard-layer

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=15/-45.5251/143.0586 Kolmen and surroundings, the church inside Kolmen is still visible in the Histor-layer and the Topomap, but is gone in the standard-layer. In the surrounding countryside the forrest and the other landscape features are not separated anymore, the forest layer is visible through the grasslands and agricultural areas in the standard-layer.

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=19/-45.65725/142.85881 In my newest town that I was working on, the church is not visible on the square, while in the other two layers it is clearly there.

Did I do something wrong in the past while mapping, or is something wrong with multipolygon relations in the map after an update? Hope you guys can help me with figuring it out.

Thanks in advance

What does this world share wtih real world, I mean I’ve seen Religions are same but nationalities and their cultures?

I’m planning to create a Turkish influenced Turkish speaking country but can it directly contain Turkish Cultural elements?

For example: A kebab restaurant, A street which has name of a Turkish celebrity etc.

Are those allowed? If not, what is allowed which has a relation with real world?

Hi there,

I would like to know if there is something way that I could delete everything in my new country and starting over again. I got permission a few days ago to edit my country and found out that someone had previously edited in here (with or without permission).

It’s hard to delete everything one by one so I’m hoping there’s a quicker way.

Thanks, ImmortalHawk

I have posted a brief resolution of my August Railroad Challenge on my bliki (here: http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/User:Luciano/Bliki/Recent). Congratulations are due to joschi81, as the winner.

For the next 2 weeks, I will be only minimally participating in OGF. You may see me in the diaries a bit, or in wiki comments, via my phone, but I will lack JOSM so it’s not likely I’ll make any edits.

I am traveling to Queensland to visit relatives (I have relatives in 5 countries on 3 continents, which is nice when it comes to choosing where to travel), and will return home to Seoul on the 15th.

Meanwhile, happy mapping to everyone.

Hello everyone,

Is there any possibility to make Infowindows on the map, like on Google maps. It would be really cool to give more informations about the locations and espacially to link the Landmarks or buildings directly to Infos or the Wiki. I know its just a Idea but are there more users out there, which are thinking that woud be an idea for the futur of OGF?

happy mapping, Lars
