So I’m sure everyone knows about the Making realistic cities wiki article. It’s quite a useful article, but I find I have a hard time making it useful.

The biggest thing that I have a hard time with is the choosing of a model city. I’m not wanting to make a city now, I want to make a small little town. There are hundreds, if not thousands, more small towns in the real world than there are large cities, and finding a good one to use as a model city seems… impractical, if not just impossible.

My plans for the town I’m working on right now (see location) is to make it a little beachside resort town, with hotels and the like near the coast. There’s already some roads there, but what I’m having trouble with is knowing how to expand those roads. Also, probably the biggest thing I struggle with, as I imagine is true with many new users, is scale. Knowing how far apart roads should be is not something that comes easily to me by any extent.

Another thing that’s difficult for me, that kind of goes along with the previous things, is “zoning,” for lack of a better word. I don’t know what areas should be commercial, what should be residential, what should be industrial (if any), etc. The only thing I really know is that I want some hotels on the roads closest to the coast. The reason why this is a problem to me is that knowing what’s going to go where affects road spacing. Residential areas are most likely going to have shorter distances between roads than a commercial area, but by how much? I have no idea how big each of these areas need to be or the road spacing for them.

I would post something like this in the forum, but I can’t, so… sorry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ok, here’s some history of, well, me.

Back in April of 2017, I stumbled upon OpenGeoFiction, and, it seeming interesting to me, I decided to join. I started work on a town in Lonowai District of Gobrassanya. I had plans for the town, but they never went too far before I got discouraged and/or lost interest, and I simply stopped mapping after a little while.

Then, in September, I remembered that OGF existed, and started mapping again. I removed everything that was in that town before and started again. I really wanted to finish the town, I didn’t want to just leave something unfinished there and go on to bigger projects in OGF. But, I did. I lost interest again, and the town was eventually just deleted. I pretty much declared to myself that OGF was not for me, I didn’t have the time or interest to get back into it again, and I’d never come back.

But I did. So that brings me to now. OGF interests me again, and I want to start mapping. I said last time that I was hoping to permanently become a part of the community, and I didn’t. I want that to actually happen this time.

I’m not going to go back to that old town in Lonowai, I want to start afresh. Since I have technically been a member for over a year (I never deleted my account or anything), I can get a country of my own if I want. I think I might do that, but I have no idea where to go.

What things can I do to help myself be a better mapper, and not lose interest or get discouraged? How do I make it seem less daunting to get started? What might be a good country to start mapping in? How can I help myself plan better?

Also, I see there’s a forum now. What’s different between the diary system and the forum? Also, what happened to the world news thing?

Sorry for the wall of text. If you read it all, thanks for taking the time to do so.

A year after joining the site, I have stripped Utterland of most of its road and rail infrastructure. Only the topographical features remain, and will form the basis of an attempt at a structured rebuild. What also remains are what I believe to be the better attempts at proper mapping, such as the cities of Galmosen, Solsburg and Welle and the Graufen Valley north of Galmosen. Constructive suggestions welcome.

Cross-border rail and road links (to Szlonsk, Vinnmark, Ventria, Isztianorszag and Koban) will remain as they are.

I joined OGF recently, so I guess I’ll make a Diary Entry as both an introduction and a way to see how this goes (because I’m still very lost)

I’m a compulsive mapper, as many of you may be (I’ve been intensively lurking this week and I’ve seen some impressive mapping skills out there), I have several city drawings, also cities in SketchUp and recently I got into JOSM to draw cities. For my debut here, I tried to do an old rural town near the Mecyna Canal, called Santiago de Prado. It ended up being not-so-rural, because I’m used to draw cities that keep growing and growing and growing… I’ve only managed to finish one city.

I live in Spain, so many of my inspirations for mapping come from its cities (You’ll never see a city of mine without a perfect square grid somewhere near the center).

I already have a very clear idea for a country, based off of a fictional country based in real-life lands. I’ll try to recreate it and use this platform to expand it. In the meanwhile, I’ll try to figure out some things to draw in JOSM.

Nice to meet you!

Hello, everyone!

It’s the first weekend in March, and that means it’s time for a new monthly challenge! The results of last month’s challenge, Healthcare, was wonderful. I saw a lot of people posting in the comments, in blikis, and elsewhere about all the fascinating health-related places they’ve mapped. Awesome work, everyone. On a personal note, I’d like to thank everyone for their well-wishes and heart-felt comments. I am recovering quite nicely, and I’m grateful to you for your kind words.

A challenge with… a tutorial

This month’s challenge is going to be a bit different, because it involves a partnership with the user Eklas, affectionately known around these parts as “George.” George publishes a weekly bliki and has decided to do a four-week tutorial through the month of March about mapping rails. He was gracious enough to let me merge the challenge into it. The hope is that we all can learn something about rail mapping to make our countries look more realistic.

The four topics that will grace the Eklas-bliki will be (links forthcoming):

The challenge

There are two tiers to this challenge: beginner–intermediate and advanced. The beginner–intermediate level is intended for either those with no knowledge of rail or those with only moderate levels of rail infrastructure. The advanced challenge is intended for those with a very high level of railway knowledge and designed to better the site over-all.

I was previously working on a small town along the highway that connects to two cities on either end of it, called Galentia, closest to the city of Celemberra in Commonia. Galentia was designed and built around a service area where people could stop along the highway, with little built for people to live there. I wanted to build something bigger, but didn’t want to mess up the idea of my town being built to be more of a service area town by making it into a city. I have little experience in making cities, and have only started working on my first town I spent a lot of time building just a few weeks ago. Also I just started using OGF in mid January. In Commonia there is a coastal city called Ambiskus City that stops at the country border near it in the direction of south, but has lots of room within the same country to grow in the direction of east. I was thinking of building a city across the border from it, just like how San Diego, California, USA and Tijuana, Mexico are next to each other on either side of the USA/Mexico Border. Anyone interested in starting a city with me there?

So, it’s me again. Been working on the city of Syron (Still a sketch, definitely won’t stay like how it is for long) and it’s subsequent Military Base, located south of the city, which has been under heavy remodeling.

Originally planned as only a military port and shipyard, it currently has it’s own airfield, 4 shipyards, 3 of which can only build destroyers or things smaller than DDs. It’s current holding capacity of troops is very high, and it’s not even half way done. In today’s update, i finally built Anti-ship and Anti-air defences, which are, in the coming days, going to be widespread across the military base.

Today, aswell, the Command Centre was finally rebuilt.

Edit: As of right now, only the TopoMap view has today’s update ready. Sorry!

So i want some feedback on the base’s current state, some ideas for tanks and airplane models, and overall, your opinion on how the base looks.

If you want to know where it is, it’s located north of the PicLayer Test City, in West Commonia, north from another city located in a peninsula just 11km off.

Hello! For the past few days, I’ve been working on developing my new country, the country of Brieland (AR045c). I was wondering if I could get some feedback for what I might need to do better, or what might need to be changed. Everything’s still a work in progress, so any suggestions are helpful!

Thanks, Warren J

I had been so much sad cause of cancellation my law lesson however I returned my home town at an early time so I had a bit of time for mapping in my country.

Today I assambled my railroads and I constructed new roads, railroads builds and somethings :)

Tomorrow I’ll try to working about some cities Penimah,Haderah,Tadilah and Homiyah…

Do you know that I inspired my towns or cities names from Hebrew and Arabic :)

Already some people can understand Kadimah,Penimah and Homiyah are from Hatikvah…

That’s all for now,in future time I’ll synthesize Hebrew and Arabic languages, cultures and their modern life styles.

BTW I’ll give name to great river (on the left great river) that name will be Zionminah..

GOOD-BYE MAPPERS!

So, i’ve barely been 3 days (ish) on this site and i’ve been having alot of fun mapping around. I’ve grabbed some inspiration from other people’s cities, albeit, most of what i build are small towns like the ones you would see where i live.

I would enjoy it if you could give me some feedback on the two towns and the roads that connect them that i’ve built (I would also enjoy some feedback on the highway infrastructure i’ve built, you can find it as “N3 Norte/Sur”)

Thanks in advance, Nick Rod. P.S: How many racetracks are there in this world? IMO i think i’m the only one who added one) Edit: I’ve been notified by some really nice people about some racetracks around here, so yeah.

As some of you may know, my country Řots in the southern part of Archanta (Astrasia) is a split society: the normal people live their own normal modern every day lives, whereas the country’s royal family and the (higher) nobility follow the more than 1200 year old Codex (a fixed set of protocols) which essentially keeps them in medieval times and in recent centuries has estranged them from the rest of the country. At first the people lived by their conservative rule, but when Řots lost a large part of their territory due to the arrival of colonial powers in the 17th century (e.g. Florescentians, Ingrish in what are now the South Astrasian Federation and Karvaland), some educated inhabitants of Řots saw that the country couldn’t develop they way they thought it should, and when it turned out to be impossible to convince the nobility to abandon or even modify the Codex, people started to just ignore the Codex, which proved to be okay for the royal family and the rest of the nobility. Since that moment, the royal household has remained located near the original ‘Royal Capital of Řots’, the city of Kotōlets, whereas the modern government operates from Nekkar. Nowadays only the prime minister has a more intimate knowledge of the King, his family, and their daily actions, but he or she knows only what the King wants him to know - which is not very much indeed, as not even the prime minister knows e.g. who is currently next in line to succeed the King when he dies.
