I’ve been working on Albert for a while, though I recently removed all my roads and started again, because I was really dissatisfied with how it was looking. I’ve tried to make a more structured system by having ‘city zones’ between tertiary+ roads that control their small region under control of the city, and the roads inside the zones are decided by them. It’s been pretty successful, but I’m still having trouble making it look like a realistic city.
My main problem, though, is dealing with elevation. The city is supposed to be in a mountain-heavy region and I have trouble making the roads appear that way. The forests are supposed to be regions too steep, that were left as forests. However, there is still lots of elevation outside those forests, and I need a little advice/help dealing with it.
I’m still mostly happy with how this is turning out, even if I had to start over.
(Also, you may see some out-of-place buildings, those are just leftover that I used for reference)
Hello
I am an active OSM contributor and I’ve always had some geofictitious worlds in my head that meet the requirements here (modern world fiction) and I would be glad to join the project for mapping my ideas in your world.
I tried to join like several years ago but my account was terminated after hours, for some unknown reasons, without me being able to do a single commit. So I hope the project is still active and that I will be able to participate in it.
If I understand, I must prove my skills by populating an area of a common zone with JOSM, create some test cities etc., and then if I am active enough I will be able to take possession of an available country.
I do not know how to get in touch with other members in case there are some mandatory ways of mapping, like some unwritten customs I should know, in addition to those written on the wiki home page etc. but anyway if I do any mistakes please let me know by PM before banning me !
I hope you understand my motivation in the project. See you at Commonia’s best beach resorts !

Hi. Im new there and i tried to create city i named Citia. i know its bad name. However, i don’t want to believe that this game is about this. do you really build those big cities with hand? or do you have bots? i would be happy if you answer. thx
Hello, guys. I have a question, as I joined very recently. How to make good cities? What should I add? Any tips? Thank you for using some of your time to review upon this.
I am making a new airport in Gobrassanya: Loken Regional Airport. This is a very small airport .
The route finding algorithm works for me only sometimes. When it works, the results were so far correct. I wanted to play around with ferry travel times but again since two days ago it is not working anymore.
Does it sometimes crash and is then resarted again regularly? I never saw it working consistently since the feature was introduced.
Is it supposed to work or still in a testing phase?
I know, this maybe is the worst question, but iam asking anyways: What is our first language, for example, in the RW, there was Mesopotamia the “first” civilization, they speaked Sumerian.
So, in conclusion Mesopotamia speaked Sumerian, so i guess OGF should have their “first” civilization AND “first” language.
PD: I will mapping my country but i was very busy this days.
PD2: My country Garzibania have an a ongoing civil war, if you do not know it (I was some busy to map it).
hi.
I just finished the Paul Luc-Jean Centrale Nucléaire (PLCN), and I wanted to know if it is the largest and how to improve it.
In 2003, the government of Bélice passed Le Loi Vert (The Green Bill), banning the use of gasoline cars by residents, among other things. One of the effects was that all old gas plants were demolished and replaced with the one new nuclear power plant. Construction was already underway as far back as 1997, and with a lot of government funding, the entire site was completed in 2018.
The construction of the facility cost the government the equivalent of $40 000 000 000, along with other costs associated with The Green Bill, which had put the nation into massive amounts of debt, but with the surplus of energy created by the plant, Bélice is now running more surpluses and slowly moving out of debt.
Each of the large stations (nicely named Station 1, 2, and 3) contain 4 state-of-the-art BEDU (Analogue of CANDU) reactors, and therefore contain 12 reactors in total. This one plant can supply the entire nation with power and still have more to export to other nations nearby. There are nearby wind and solar farms, as well as hydroelectric dams (coming in the future)
What do you think? Any questions?
Note: The buildings will be resized and the layout changed.
Thanks, Zekiel
I’d like some constructive criticism on what I have so far here in Vertbourne.
After some thought, I decided that much of Nantozito, the capital of Aháas, just did not look right to me. Therefore, I also decided that I wanted to redo some parts of the city. I was wondering, given the geography, could anyone here provide any tips as to the city’s new layout so that I may improve it?
Hello, everyone!
It’s April, and our monthly challenge, courtesy of isleño, has to do with water! The results of last month’s challenge, rail, was wonderful. If you didn’t get to work on rail during March, don’t fret; you can always go back and review Eklas’s wonderful bliki posts about how to design a rail network. If you did work on railways, feel free to your work to the challenge page over on the wiki.
Inland waterways, such as lakes and rivers, are an often overlooked aspect of mapping on OGF. I know that most users are not hydrology experts, and I definitely do not profess to be one. I do know, however, that we have a pretty good primer for how to draw rivers. One thing that gets overlooked, however, is the detailing of the riverbanks or lakeshores.
For this month’s challenge, there are three tiers:
As you complete your new work, share it below or in a bliki. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask a friend!
Now, let’s get mapping! Good luck, everyone!
Alright, I may not be an expert on mapping, but I thought there should be some ‘mapping workouts’, you know, like warm-ups before taking on big or even medium projects.
The Mappers’ Workout is quite inspired by ‘Composers’ Workout’ from Art of Composing, where, well, anyone interested in composing is welcomed, learn some basic composing techniques and share ideas, like a forum. So like the owner of the website then started some workouts for us, quite long ago (I only re-visited the site a few days ago, then go exploring the new features a bit).
Anyway, back to the workout. The workout is based on this compositional workout, the very first one.
It can be hard to even draw a town from scratch, let alone a mega city or the capital. So I thought of starting this workout with the following instructions. (it can be done using iD or JOSM, but iD will work fine at zoom 17.)
Draw just a few streets in any pattern you like, maybe like a 3x3 grid or streets spread out form a point. The streets do not have to be too long, maybe like 100m or so.
Determine the land-use you would like for each street (or grid if you are drawing grids). (Residential, Commercial, Retail etc.)
Draw buildings and restaurants or whatever is appropriate. The features do not be as large as a hospital or a college. Draw small, not big.
Mind your scale and everything. Basic mapping rules still apply.
There is no need to go and develop and expand the set of streets or go into very deep details during this workout. You are only practising the skill of creating new stuff, not developing features. This is important.
After you are done with the basic stuff, well, feel free to do anything. If you have no use for the stuff you drew, then feel free to delete it, though it will be a shame.
I thought I’d share this article comparing population densities of European cities.
It has a lot of information on how, when, and why the most crowded neighborhoods developed, and includes several satellite images for reference.
This could be useful for those of us who might be designing European-style cities in our OGF territories.
Just discovered this amazing website today. I have signed up and am looking forward to contributing!
Thanks, campbt
Hi all. I just want to let you know that I am making a new city named Ville de Desirs. This city will be a new challenge for me, and I want all of you to give me any suggestion. I am accepting ALL ideas. So far, I have begun construction on the entrance to the city. The city will soon link to Persil Town and possibly cross a bridge to Ville de’Ieau. This city will be a new and important addition to my country. Thank you all for making a wonderful community!
P.S. The updates will only show at a certain zoom.
I think that a lot of new users, create countries with no etymology (not derived from a word) like Peaceland or Buildtion, even Iceland and Greenland have an etymology. I think there should be a guide for that to make OGF more versamilitude.
PD: Is ironic that Greenland have a lot of ice and Iceland having a lot of green grass.
As I am drawing and sketching ideas for the country such as places for major cities and rivers and natural features, I was wondering how would I add important places? For example, a capital city? I may only have like one place but I was wondering, since other countries do and how would I put it on here?
I’ve felt a bit stuck in my normal mapping lately, but my home city irl just did a major revamp of their bus system so I’d been thinking a lot about buses and routes lately. I decided to make a QUARTA bus map for central Quentinsburgh based on the routes I’d listed out on the QUARTA wiki page!!
The PDF is here:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1XcvmZwxNy4rLSnduWoYwB6vKeiyW6-V8
Technically this is “West-Central and Downtown Quentinsburgh”, since “Central” refers to the area in the very middle of the city, east of what’s shown on this map.
These routes are subject to change of course, but since the roads in the area other than the islands (hence the unnumbered bus routes) are pretty much complete, I thought now would be a good time to show you guys. Blue C routes are “Crosstown”/frequent service routes, the red are just regular local routes. Express buses aren’t listed yet. Gray in the background is QLine Metro & Metro BRT, and the green and light blue are streetcars that run through downtown.
I still need to do a lot to it, like add transit centers and subway stops, but I think the general idea here is pretty far along.
(Alas my old laptop recently got stolen so I lost the subway map I’d been working on for the last year… but hopefully I’ll be able to get started on that again at some point too)
Hello, I have been a member here for a little more than a year, but I have only really been active for the past few months. So… greetings…
