Hi everyone,

Brennland is slowly taking shape, and being a mostly mountainous country, ski resorts are of course one of the main features on map!

So, here are the first I’ve mapped, just take a look and maybe tell me what you think about them!

RIGGLBERG SKIPARADIES [https://opengeofiction.net/go/2T2AG3o–] This ski resort is the closest to the capital city Brig, so it can get very crowded during weekends; luckily there are modern lifts, and three access points: the Weisswand cable car from Aachten, the lifts from Riegl am Mittewald and the gondola connected with Rigglberg train station. The slopes run mainly through the Rigglberg forest, with only the highest ones being on open ground, just beneath the Hornegg peak (2057 m.)

RHEINERHORN SKIZENTRUM [https://opengeofiction.net/go/2T32yaG] One of the most loved ski resorts in the country, offers slopes for every level of skier, from the beginners to the most expert (just try the Burgstallberg black slope!). Slopes run both through woods and on open ground, depending on the elevation, of course, with the lowest point being at 1095m and the highest at 2600m, just beneath the towering Rheinerhorn. There’s even an Alpine Coaster just next to the starting point of the lifts on the Freienfeld versant.

PFELDERS-SCHOGGLERALM [https://opengeofiction.net/go/2T3~P42] One of the most renowed ski resorts in the country, thanks to the Hagner black slope, a very challenging track that hosts one of the most famous slaloms in the Alpine Ski World Cup. There’s a “ski stadion” at the end of the slope. The resort spreads on two versants, the one beneath Götschhorn and Pfeldererspitze (facing Pfelders), and the Schoggleralm side. They connect at the Naglersattel, reached by a funifor lift from the northern side and a gondola on the southern. Access to the slopes is possible directly from the town of Pfelders or from Lautal valley bottom, thanks to a cable car and a long gondola.

So sooner or later, my city “The Premises” is going to grow to a decent size that is enough for me to make a wiki about it. The only problem is that I don’t own a territory (and I’m not really thinking about that until my city and surrounding area is completely finished). So how can I do this?

Maybe this is just a phase, but I’m not feeling as motivated as I used to be about my country, Basmia. A couple weeks ago I added some extra roads, but that felt more like something I had to do rather than wanted to do.

Honestly, I think the reason I’m feeling this way is because I’m stressing about my scale of things. Since I enjoy urban mapping more than rural or geographical, I tend to overlook rivers, coastlines and other natural features, so when I overhauled Basmia a few months back, I added some of those things based on a concept map I made, but I haven’t touched them since. When I worked on Basmia last, I realized that the Basmia River is way, way, WAY too big, and therefore out of scale. And of course, I just don’t feel motivated enough to edit it, putting it simply.

The hardest thing about OGF is getting started, because all you have is a huge, blank canvas and, in your own territory, nobody to tell you what to do. Maybe I should join a collaborative country, turn in Basmia, and start over for the second time in my OGF “career”.

If anybody owns one of these collaboratives, please let me know if you’re looking for new members.

Hello everyone, Happy 2019!

Haven’t written a new diary for a while, so this time I’m gonna show something I made quite a long time ago, the Royal City of Cinasia.

I have been read some books about the ancient Chinese city planning, the wisdom of ancient people is so amazing.

The Royal City is inspired by the Forbidden City in Peking, and yes, the scale of both are similar, and they look similar too, but the details are different. I tried to obey the ancient Chinese law, all main buildings locate on an axis(中軸線), the front part of palace is the center of political activities and the back part is the living areas. Hope you guys like it.

I am the owner of Bärland, the northern neighbour of UL141. I want to start developing the southern part of my country and I wonder about what to do with the border with UL141. The country has been “unavailable. Possibly a future collaborative territory” for a long time now.

What would you suggest to do in this situation? For example I have mapped some mountains in my country and I think it would make sense to have a mountain range that extends into UL141. However, what do I do if the future admin of that country doesn’t want mountains?

Hello everyone,

I’ve spent some time the last couple of days on a rather intensive project, where I once again took on the task to crunch some numbers regarding inter-city train travel in Kojo. I’ve now officially opened my first Bliki to showcase the results, and would love to hear your thoughts as well as your advise on my follow-up question.

Cheers

Hey guys,

so winter break is already over now and now I have time to write a diary entry. I wanted to ask you guys to review/look over/rate my airport, that I build over the winter break and the last days. So I build it in Commonia, because I wanted to start a project, until my requested territory gets approved, but since it didn’t I finished my project in Commonia.

As you can see the airport is pretty big and would be one of the larger ones in the OGF world. I tried to include all amenities, that an airport needs. If you find any missing amenities or buildings, please feel free to comment.

Also some of the industrial areas spread to the north and south of the airport are not finished yet.

Thank you for your reviews and have fun exploring my airport.

Hi guys,

proud of having Blöndel as the featured map in the wiki, I have gained new motivation to continue mapping as well as writing about it. I know that some see the wiki as a problematic rival for mapping itself, but for me, writing the wiki supports the mapping in many ways. I think map features become more alive and have more depth when they are explained.

This new article may seem like overwikification: Why write details about mythology? But consider the following:

  • It explains the existence of several museums, like Gamaliel Bortotan Museum of Art and Mythological Museum of Blöndel.
  • It explains the significance of the capital Blöndel, its river and the surrounding hills to the people of Bloregia
  • It explains several names, like street names in the area of Shefull
  • It casts light upon details like This stone of the Building of the Marqurd Guild (can you find it in the map?)
  • Most importantly, it gives is a frame of reference for the mapping that I want to share in case anyone is interested. If not, it is still important for me as a mapper.

The Bloregian legends have developed during many years. One of them I have written into a mini-novel in Finnish. As the legends reflect many timeless questions of mankind, feel free to take influences into your stories.

Yet, focus on mapping, where all this comes to life!

Not too long ago, I decided to change my country’s name to something new. I’ve come up with some ideas, what do you all think?

“Albert/Albertia/Albertland” - The last name of the guy who leads whatever movement that leads to my country’s founding. I still need to decide on an actual history, but Albert is the name I chose for whatever it ends up being. I already named a city in my country Albert, though.

“Pacton/Pactell” - Like Peaceland, but I use the word Pact instead.

“New Bailand/New Bai” - If the Bai Empire does end up happening, this name would follow a history where my country was originally part of it.

“Peacia/Peacan/Peacton/Peacester” - Some names that still use the word Peace.

If you have any suggestions, I’d be happy to hear some.

Sorry, this is bush league, but…I can usually figure out what went wrong when I get JOSM error messages, but I have not been able to figure out what to do to correct this, and now I’ve got a significant update that I can’t upload.

Any help from those of you who don’t find JOSM totally inscrutable would be much appreciated!!

Hello everyone

I’m new here, actually I have been editing for 7 days and I made a request for a territory, but since the admin is busy and probably there’s a lot of request wating for approval, I’m concerning about it because I’m making a country, and I chose a green territory to settle it, but if someone already requested it, I will have to throw away a lot of stuff I made due to my country is getting huge, and everything I make has something to do with my requested territory.

So my question is: Did someone here request the UL303 Territory? And which territories are available?

Hello, OGF community!

I hope everyone is doing well this fine January day. As you all know, we have a community with a lot of diverse interests and areas of expertise. And, in the spirit of collaboration, learning, and continuing to become better-skilled mappers, I offer a two-fold challenge for the month of January: a focus on the OSM keys “landuse” and “natural;” and a collaborative response or tutoring.

Be advised: This challenge isn’t just about showing off your work. I want this to be a good learning experience for everyone. So, whether you have a territory or not, you are invited to learn more and hone your skills!

We all want the map to look beautiful. Did you know, for example, that there are a whole host of landuse values to use? Do you know about the numerous natural values? Some, like natural=beach and natural=wetland are rendered differently depending on the additional tagging? There are a lot of hidden gems in here to help make the map look great and communicate details.

How to participate

Beginner challenge:

  • Unsure what to do or don’t have a territory yet? Start small with a 1 square kilometre area. Experiment with some tags and ask for feedback in the comments below. Allow users to give you a reply to make your mapping better.
  • If you are awaiting your territory, the blue countries provide a wonderful space to practice with this challenge. That way, your area could be among the best mapped on the site one day.

Easy challenge:

  • Post one or two of your favorite examples of how you use landuse and natural tags.
  • Reply to at least one user about their work.

Medium challenge:

  • Experiment with new tagging and with different (albeit plausible) ways of arranging landscape. Try to limit transportation infrastructure to the lowest levels possible.
  • Provide direct feedback to at least two users about their work.

Hard challenge:

I have all kinds of busy stuff so I didn’t map as much.

Public Transport Viewer updates

(If you don’t know what PTV is, read my previous diary entry.)

  • Lines and stations will now render if you scrolled past the antimeridian. Especially useful if you forgot which direction you should scroll to see lines in Kartumia. (Originally, it’ll give a “Bad Request” error, as Overpass cannot accept East/West values outside -180~+180.) However, the map CANNOT include the antimeridian itself. (You probably wouldn’t do that, it’s just water.)
  • New ogf:opacity tag. Put in a value between 0 and 1 and it’ll change the opacity of all lines as well as all nodes of the relation. Defaults to 1.
  • More details on a line. Before it was like…

old

Now… (Shown with all available details displayed. Of course, it’ll not show tags you didn’t add, but this should encourage people to fill in details!)

The search function (Nominatim) has broken, any search returns the result:

Error contacting nominatim.openstreetmap.org: execution expired

This on top of the direction finder being out of action for over a year. And the territory requests taking a little while longer than usual.

Maybe the idea to put a temporary stop on territory requests until everything is sorted out is the way to get on top of all of these issues.
