So, lately I’ve been working a lot on my city of Klausburg (international/Ingerish name Clausburgh). I think almost all urban parts of the city are mapped to a certain extent. The parts that aren’t mapped yet are:

  • the western parts of Antre and Neustat (up to West Ringweg and Sut Ringweg)

  • the southern part of Neustat (south of Neu Kai and the small railway bridge)

After that I plan on mapping suburban and rural areas in the entire administrative area.

So, what I’d like to hear is: is this a good “sketch” of a city with around 120k to 200k inhabitants (I’m not sure about what the population should be)? Does it resemble a European city in a valley among the mountains? Is it mapped well so far?

Best regards and thanks in advance

Today is February 15th, meaning we’re now over the hump of the four-week-long City Sprint! I’ve noticed a slump in mapping, and have been feeling a bit wrung out myself lately…yesterday was the first day since Feb 1 that I didn’t map at all. A challenge like this is more fun with friends, so since the User Diaries send updates when replies are added I thought a post here could be a fun way for those of us who’d like a bit of communal cheering-on to get our fix.

Over the second half of the City Sprint, post updates, ideas, questions, etc. related to your City Sprint projects here. The point of this thread is to create an encouraging environment, so please avoid snark, sarcasm, rudeness, abruptness, etc.

I’ll kick things off. My goal was to kick the development of my country’s capital city into warp-speed; it was a completely blank slate at the start of the month, just a name on the map. I’m really excited about the amount of progress I’ve made so far; the central city is pretty much done in terms of the street network, and a number of key buildings are already mapped. Here’s a link where you can check out the progress I’ve made so far on Canan-Yar.

What have you been up to these past two weeks? Any exciting projects completed? New ideas sparked? Share away!

I’ve been mapping Dunwic in its new spot for over a year now and I have to say I’m really happy with how my neighbourhoods are turning out, especially the city centre and areas north of the river.

Although I’ve been doing a lot of detailing my next plan is to start fleshing out the shape and limits of the city and when that’s done there won’t be much scope for making any major changes. That’s why I want to get people’s feedback on whether they think the shape of Dunwic is realistic and what kind of things they would expect to see in the surrounding area.

https://opengeofiction.net/#map=13/56.3649/20.0500

There won’t really be any traditional suburbia due to the political and planning history of the city. Instead Dunwic will be quite physically small but dense all the way to the edges like some Dutch cities.

https://opengeofiction.net/#map=17/56.40719/20.05437 < this is the northern extent of Dunwic and how I envisage many of the outer neighborhoods looking.

Four counties in New Carneby (Federal States of Archanta) west of the metropole of Stanton shall be develloped. This work is nothing for friends of motorways and excessive rectangled street grids - here we prefer a more rurual type of urbanisation.

Rails, motorways and primary roads are given. No more “towns”. (“Town” here mean a place with more than 50,000 inhabitants). Only one town in each county may have 100,000 to 120.000 inhabitants, the others with lesser people. Only small regional airfields (one in a country). Town boundaries here are usual with admin_level = 8

Only one wiki-article for each county to avoid overwikification.

Sure you may change details of the given items, but not the generel layout. May be at some occassions you feel, a changing of the layout is necessary - then we can discuss about. If you can be friend with this conditions, please write to BMSOUZA or histor to get your claim.

It can be offered:

=== Aldergate County === see [https://opengeofiction.net/#map=11/-40.3552/159.3622] flat landscape. In the east sleeping towns for Stanton, in the west rurual character. Town boundaries are given.

=== Beaver County === see [https://opengeofiction.net/#map=11/-40.6809/159.1116] low hills, generally rurual character, in the east sleeping towns for Stanton

=== Pacuhanco County === see [https://opengeofiction.net/#map=11/-40.7704/158.8712] flat landscape, rurual character, in the west more or less swampy area of Carnegy River. In the east changing to soft hills. You may add few towns

=== Six Lakes County === see[https://opengeofiction.net/#map=11/-40.9454/159.1143] hilly landscape, holiday area for Stanton, many weekend-houses, small villages and towns, romantic lakes

Hello!

I’m CharlieG from Artenia. But, in the real OpenStreetMap, I’m Gorbs. I map areas around my home in Suburban Philadelphia, USA. Recently, I’ve been getting into mapping extreme detail and residential areas, since that’s what most areas around me are comprised of, and what most areas are missing. While enjoying myself, I stopped mapping for a second and appreciated the updated design of OSM compared to OGF. I wondered why its top bar looked cleaner, why there were many more features for points, lines, and areas compared to OGF, etc. I noticed a while back (maybe 6-9 mo. ago) that OGF got an update, and the servers were down for about a day for me. Will this happen again soon? Could it? Not to be so arrogant in understanding how the server works, but I am curious as to why the major update has not happened yet.

Thanks for tuning in! -C

I forgot to mention this in my previous post, so I’d like to ask if anybody wanted to collaborate on the coastline of my soon-to-be revamped country, Basmia. I’m absolutely hopeless at coastlines and natural shapes, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Please DM me if you’re interested.

Thanks, BP483

Earlier today, I cleared out my territory, Basmia, for the second time in a year (it may not have rendered yet).

My scale was out of whack and I hadn’t focused on the geographical features as much.

I’ve made a concept map showing my new plans for my country. You can see it here.

Any feedback on it would be much appreciated. :)

Hey everyone.

I’d love some input on Beaudry, a Leressan city right between the capital of Aludres and the stylish (soon to be overhauled) city of Montecari (maybe I could have worked on Montecari for the City Sprint… guess it’s too late, lol!). It’s main forms of public transportation are buses and streetcars, and is home to the City University of Beaudry, one of the most prestigious institutions in the Kadmar Basin.

I’d love to know how the city looks (sprawl, mapping of downtown, etc.), and ways to improve (what to do with the port, beaches?, etc.).

Thanks!

Diversity of the OGF World must be one of the top Issues, e.g country size, politically, equality, wealth disparity and overall the level of economic development in a given country, to live in a OGF World where every country is in the High ranking of the HDI is rather unrealistic.

Edit— I also think that this whole idea of a global economy could relate to the FSA and a potential Community Soviet Union, ensuring we have a Limited Multi-polar world could tie in to economic prosperity. I have always thought that UL099 could be fantastic in that role, think how much natural resources it will have, also it would obviously be a strong ally with Antigo.

Hello, everyone!

It’s February, and things are heating up in our OGF world. There was some creative and really well-done work on the last challenge with landuse types. If you requested feedback during the last couple weeks, I have replied and tried to offer a couple thoughts.

For this month, the challenge is simple: participate in the City Sprint. Louis has done an amazing job getting things rolling, so please send some acknowledgements his way for his hard work. Given the success and enthusiasm, it was decided to role the monthly challenge right into the sprint. Best of all—it’s a create-your-own-adventure-type challenge. The goal is to map as much as you can, as often as you can, and at the highest quality you can all in a single location. You can read more about it on the wiki page (linked above) and the corresponding discussion page. Oh, and for those on the wiki, PortCal has created a cool template to keep track of your work.

Best of luck to everyone! Happy mapping.

So I’ve been expanding my city to a decent size than before, and I was wondering if I should start doing the details. I realize that the city blocks are way smaller than regular… maybe I should fix that some time in the future. Just wondering what I should do next and what to start with…

Thanks

Hello everyone,

I’ve been mapping in my territory Ablecia for a little while now. My main area of focus has been the city of Newbyford in the North West of the country, along with some smaller towns and villages I have created between the city and the Montgomery Wood area.

Anyone with a few minutes to spare, I would happily take on any feedback about my mapping, along with any constructive criticisms you may have!

Many thanks :)

The Mappers Challenge got buried under a long list of newer diary entries, so as today is the 31st Jan I will post about my contribution here:

My land area is part of the Majos Valley, the flood plain of the biggest river in Karolia and two national parks: https://opengeofiction.net/#map=14/51.7633/111.7834

The peaceful landscape is largely grassland [landuse: check] and has only a few gentle hills which the river meanders around. On the higher ground the grasses become heathland [landuse: check]. The river has shifted course a lot in its history and many oxbow lakes and ponds exist [landuse: check], as well as extensive reed beds [check] and wet meadows [check]. Some of the watercourses are man-made, from attempts to farm aquatic produce and fish, as well as manage the drainage off the land.

‘Limited infrastructure’ means few roads. Instead the railway and long-distance cycle and footpaths are the access to this area. These run on boardwalks over the marshy ground, and also on a special bridge over the railway line. This wasn’t strictly necessary as traffic is light enough for a level crossing, but it was built to allow a view and information displays about the grasslands towards Majoslinna, the town built on a kopje (an eccentric thrust of hard rock). Cycle route K1 is a high-quality dedicated path that runs right up Karolia from Santjana to the mountains and visits important sites and cities. On this branch line, trains have cycle spaces installed to facilitate day trips and cycle tourism. It’s considered important to make alternatives to car use more attractive here to protect the environment in this landscape hence the lack of roads. Numerous species of water birds, aquatic reptiles and insects live here. Very occasionally river dolphins swim this far north from the coast, hunting fish.
