Recent diary entries
I’ve been recently editing more. The capital city, Aŭstraĉerfubo, is still in developing and I have new ideas around another cities like Delta Insulo and Hesperico Marborda, and another new ideas around the geography, inspired in the comments of the last diary entry. So now it is time for a new diary entry, still focusing in natural geography, but now trying to figure out some more human aspects.
Lets start with the actual state of editions:
It may left so many things, such as an airport, the industrial areas and ports. From now I announce that the ferry routes are open from the capital to another cities at the other side of the strait.
Before continuing, there are many aspects to solve about the island:
Does anyone have any ideas concerning the origins of Communism and/or Fascism? How did it come about? Were there any alliances between these countries, like the Axis or the Warsaw Pact? Were there any countries ‘central’ to the ideology, like Nazi Germany or the USSR? How and why did the ideologies fall? Are there still some fascist/communist states around?
I’m leaving this as an open-ended discussion as this is a broad topic. It would be great to hear different ideas on this topic. I’m especially curious to find out whether this follows a path similar to the modern world, i.e. powerblocs, or whether it arose differently.
Hello fellow mappers!
In order to inform everyone I decided to write this here, so everyone knows it’s there and could use it if they want.
I found myself - and clearly many other users too - missing some infoboxes about things we love to write about most, like public transportation and wars. I did create them immediately in my best way possible, and here they are. And there will be more coming soon.
The Port infobox is made for ports already existing on the Harbour page. Since there is a lot of attention for air traffic, which already has an comprehensive infobox, this should make seaports more interesting to write about. As the documentation is not ready yet, an example is available here.
The Mass Transit infobox was a largely missed one looking at various diary posts, resulting into alternatives like images as infobox or no infobox at all. Since Public Transit was already used and I don’t know who makes use of it, it’s called Mass transit.
As a nice finishing touch, the infobox it’s colors are customizable, so that it could fit the logo or such so it’s more pleasing to the eye. Note that this is only optional. Read the documentation for more information about how to use it, although it’s quite easy to use.
The Military conflict infobox was a nightmare to make. To make it look like the one on Wikipedia, the width of the columns had to be adjusted. Since all infobox columns are made equal by the stylesheet (a code page that tells how everything on the wiki should look), I had to be very creative to solve this, but it worked and now it’s there, looking like it’s big wikipedia brother, but completely build for OGF-use from scratch. It could be used to describe all your conflicts, wars, battles, etc. already there on the Wars and Conflicts page. The information in the preview of this infobox are just placeholders. Please read the documentation for more information how to use it.
I was thinking of how i could better my structural interpretation on how cities, suburbs, towns, and villages are made. I’ve been looking at the structure of cities like Chennai in India and London in Great Britain, and the structure of villages in parts of Africa, America, China, etc. And i’ve been looking at the road structure of that of small towns, and suburbs. How does a village develop into a town, and from a town into a city with time? Do they tear down roads and rebuild them to better suit their needs? (That’s just how i think they do it) I need tips (or help) to understand HOW they do it.
Hello, I’m the owner of a territory named Vinnmark, located on the southeastern coast of the Vinn Sea. I’m building the new capital city, Berles, a city inspired by the cities of Amsterdam and Brussels, but as I’m a new user, I would like you to help me building it. I’ve read many articles about realistic cities but my cities always look like a bunch of non-sense streets, mostly because I don’t make good motorways and that kind of. … Would you like to help me building some streets, just streets in the city of Berles? This is the location: http://opengeofiction.net/#map=16/56.2588/44.5615
Pre-Word
I am 232 edits in and it has been a while since I posted a ‘trailings of a beginner’ post, but I may just rename this series to ‘update’ or ‘Legendardisch Progress’ series in the future, but for now, Trailings of a beginner will do. Last time I let you go with a view of the Central Station of Endeavour and the town of Reinoud. What has changed since then??
Endeavour
The biggest grower I think is the city of Endeavour. Just take a look

We have some parks and the city on Middel Eilandt has grown. You can also see the border of the Autonomous City Regions or Stadsdelen (Admin # 3 = state, 4 = water boards, 5 = Municipal, 6 = Autonomous City Region OR town/village etc)
So Endeavour is a city in the state of Staats-Stad in Legendardisch with 3 auto. city regions, Middel Eilandt, Haeven and Arend.
Anyway, I am planning out the harbor, its not final but a rough… sketch?
For a while now, I have had this idea of creating a “Monthly Mapper’s Challenge.” I think it could be a way to challenge ourselves and develop our map-making skills in OGF.
So I have decided to give a try at creating one.
Luciano’s Mapper’s Challenge #1 - April, 2016
Many people would agree, OGF has too many roads. I don’t mean in absolute terms - clearly, the real world, as seen in OSM, has even more roads than OGF. What I mean is that the proportion of roads to other objects is too high. Much of our world has almost ONLY roads. So I decided to make my first OGF mapping challenge about roads - or rather, anti-roads.
The challenge is simple. For the month of April, try to concentrate on mapping things other than roads.
By roads, I mean any use of the “highway” tag, (except perhaps highway=pedestrian, highway=path, highway=footway, or other non-automotive uses of the tag).
The challenge has three levels.
- Advanced Challenge: for the month of April, create NO new roads in your territory; focus on other objects: rivers, lakes, coastlines, land cover, building, schools, churches, anything you want.
- Medium Challenge: for the month of April, for each road you create, also create some other non-road object. You don’t have to keep exact count, just try to emphasize other objects.
- Easy Challenge: for the month of April, create at least one interesting feature for your territory that has no roads; examples could be a nature reserve or conservation area, an island or neighborhood that bans automobiles, a botanic garden or zoo, etc.
This challenge is on the “honor system” - no one is going to check the accuracy of your claim. If you are interested in trying this challenge, just leave a note below, in the next few days. At the end of the month, we can make another diary post to see how poeple did. If there is a lot of interest, we could do “challenges” every month, and maybe make a wiki page to record results.
I have recently been working on the city of Känton, http://opengeofiction.net/#map=12/52.1208/111.0096 and a few issues have sprung up which are related to more general mapping practices. Känton is a small city founded in the late medieval period which is an important academic, scientific, religious and tourist centre as well as being an increasingly important business hub. The city is turning out more British than I’d originally planned it, being based on Oxford, Durham, Bristol and Bath but with a bit of Hanover too. It is far from complete yet of course.
Firstly, what exactly is defined as a suburb as opposed to a locality or neighbourhood? I have been given every village-sized area between main roads a suburb names, because it’s likely they would have been villages before the city expanded.
Secondly, can I show the suburban railway line out to the airport as under construction? The airport has only been expanding recently and the line is not completed yet. Are the stations too close together? The line running north to the west of the city will probably go into a tunnel for a good part of its route.
Is the river bifurcation accurate? I have the Majos and the Camin both split shortly before they meet - would this really happen? Is the way the channels have been straightened realistic?
Are the streets an accurate block size for a fourteenth- to eighteenth-century city centre? Am I putting the split carriageways of roads far enough apart?
Should I give the city a tramway network? It already has buses and an S-Raud (suburban railway) and is quite hilly with heritage streets that residents would object to having overhead wires on. On the other hand, Karolians like trams, congestion is a problem, the railways do not really serve the city centre and the city council is affluent enough to afford more public transport.
Most of you have probably heard of QUARTA, Quentinsburgh, Freedemia’s transit system.
One of the nicest things about my city in my opinion is the subway system, as I’ve managed to make a system that seems to make sense and works with the bus system and major corridors as well. I imagine the area to be very transit focused as Freedemia continues to move away from car travel in favor of transit. (slowly. But surely)
One of the hardest things though was the metro map. For the time being I was able to use Google Drawings to create a somewhat visually pleasing map that covers the entire system (just showing basic lines).
I’m mostly satisfied with it too. Considering what I used and the lack of stations on the map, it looks pretty good for an overview map. I even made a night service version.
Currently I need to delete this page:

But soon I will need deleting some files I uploaded… would I need to ask an admin every time??
Best regards to all!!

I’ve started a wiki page for an international organization called the “Developing Nations Forum” which is open to all low-income/developing countries.
The main point of the organization is really just so we can get a sense of which countries are low-income/developing and where they’re located, so anyone with this type of country should please go ahead and add it to the member list.
There’s also a list of former members, so if your country may have been considered low-income/developing anytime since 1968 (but not today) you can choose to add it there instead.
Thanks!
I’ve been on OGF for about two or three months now. I got my own country about a month and a half ago, and have been building there since. I’ve been looking at what i have built and been thinking to myself “Am I doing this right?” I’ve also been looking at the structure of real-world countries, and been trying to mimic them, but it doesn’t feel “right”. It feels like i’m doing something wrong… Maybe you guys can help. My Country is Caspilinia. Yokimpia needs some work done on it, and there is a village “Fronteira” where the three countries border to the mid-west near a mountain. I’ve been using Potlatch as my editing tool.
Elhadia (former location of Karolia) is now open for any user to edit. However, please consult with me before making any big changes like new cities and large objects.
You can read about the country’s history and other background here: http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Elhadia. Elhadia is an ex-Karolian colony and had a dictatorship following independence. The flavour of the map will be sub-Saharan Africa, a mixture of European colonial, traditional West African and Arab influences. Language is invented but should sound African.
The country is mostly desert, with some mountains in the north, and a little savannah and tropical forest close to the coastline. Many rivers and lakes are seasonal, there are also salt pans and oasis.
The main industries are the mining of iron ore, coal, copper and gold, as well as some rare metals like tantalum (used to make smartphones) and uranium. Agriculture growing fruits and goat herding are still widely practiced.
Elhadia is one of the poorest countries in the world and the infrastructure should reflect this. There are no motorways and only a few dual-carriageway highways around the main cities. Country roads are only in good repair when used by mining vehicles regularly. Railways are almost all used for freight. There are shanty towns and slums surrounding all main cities. Please, please, don’t slap yet another USA grid city with skyscrapers and motorway tunnels and a subway here, it doesn’t belong. There are a few modern buildings, even quite tall ones, in the capital, but mostly post-colonial layout of cities (which will mean a grid, just with a small block size)
Any small objects left from the old Karolia can be deleted.
Well, i have claimed the country (and admin accepted it). What do i have to do now? Do i need to make a region covering all of the country? Because i see that my neighboor did it. Also, i think i have to change name of my country. How to do this? I can’t find point which may display the name “UL033c”, so i can’t change it. That’s all for now. Sorry for bad English ;) .
Having been unsatisfied with my previous attempts at drawing the capital, which all desceneded into grid-madness, I’ve started building the city using the historical progression method similar to the way Wesmandy is going. As such, here is Sadiemarkt ca. 1200-1350ish. I’ve only worked on the area within the city walls for the moment, as I wanted to get some opinions before I went too far. Future expansion plans put the central business district stretching from the current center (within the walls) out to Trakẙ de Carrighi̋sa (south of the walls)
For context, I’ve redesigned the terrain for the whole country, of course matching at the borders, but I haven’t redrawn things except around Sadiemarkt and Cape Aritsom (across the estuary and along the peninsula to the north), so thats why the rivers are broken to the west of the city and other terrain mismatches.

I’m wondering if there’s any constructive criticism or feedback anyone can give me on the construction of my new country, territory TA330. Let me know what you think! Click on the location to visit it.
When I contribute to OSM one of the tasks I like to do is updating the transport data for a few cities in the UK. This is shown on the Transport Layer which shows bus routes and gives rendering priority to public transport infrastructure.
I don’t know how feasible it is to bring this feature into OGF? It would be nice to be able to add bus routes and have them render on the map.
I’m currently mapping out a hospital in my city Fort Johnston (in Commonia) and I want to create a flyover bridge to connect two different buildings across a road. Is there a special tag I should use or way so that it appears correctly on the map?
