First thing:

We’re Live! Welcome back, everyone. Happy mapping!

Second thing:

I’ve noticed some of you have discovered that under the new rails port software from OSM, you’re able to change your username.

This is pretty cool, but there’s a problem: our territory assignment system is based on your username. Uh oh.

If you change your username without first letting us know, you might lose your territory. And if you let us know, we might not notice, because we are all very busy right now.

Recommendation: hold off on changing your username. And if if you have changed your username, change it back. For now.

In the long run, we will change our territory assignment system to be based on your user ID number, which is guaranteed to stay the same.

I am still seeing users being locked out of the site because their email addresses are rejecting our new mail server’s best efforts to deliver email to them.

This is not our fault. Microsoft, Apple, et al. have decided our email server is an untrustworthy email server and are returning our emails to us undelivered. They offer no technical support in how to get un-blacklisted.

Other email providers are not having this problem. Notably, gmail works fine.

If you have a hotmail, icloud, outlook, live .com, or other email provider that might be ignoring our emails, your best solution is to change to a different email address.

To fix the problem, send me an email at luciano(at)geofictician.net , FROM your new email address, and telling me your OGF username and your old email address.

Thanks for understanding.

We are still seeing performance issues with the render server.

To better be able to understand these issues, we have decided to temporarily suspend the ogf-topo render.

Please be reassured - the topo render is very important to me. It’s one of the reasons I’m so involved in this project. I will not leave it “abandoned” as it was on the old OGF server. If I must, I’ll build a second render server to host ogf-topo.

But meanwhile, we will shut down the topo render so that we can troubleshoot performance problems and get the ogf-carto render running at its best possible ability.

Thank you for your patience.

Let’s give this a try.

The rails port seems to be performing okay. So if you want to sign in and try mapping, go ahead and visit the lost password recovery page:

https://opengeofiction.net/user/lost-password

You will get an email with your new password. Reset it and start mapping.

Please note the wiki remains “closed” - you can look at it, but no general editing will be permitted, for at least another week, while we get things organized.

Meanwhile, welcome to our new servers.

Our email server is not yet fully functional for incoming messages, therefore please message using the OGF messaging system or send me an email at luciano(↻)geofictician.net . If I’m swamped with questions, I might take a while to get to yours, however.

Several common problems:

  1. A bright red “ActionController…” error. Or else the site keeps logging you out. This is nothing to panic about. It’s a “stale cookie” problem and can be resolved by patient refreshes of your browser cache (control-F5) or maybe trying to open our site in an incognito window. Annoying. How to fix is unclear, so far.

  2. Slow load on map render. This will happen for any region where you’re the first visitor. It will pick up speed as more people visit various spots on the map.

  3. Oauth seems weird, wrong data, etc. Delete and revoke any old Oauth applications, authorizations and tokens attached to your account, and make new ones. Oauth is working fine, they just need to be generated on the new server rather than inherited from the old one.

Greetings, fellow mapper! On behalf of the OGF Transition Team, please be advised that OGF will be temporarily unavailable from Friday 27 August, through the weekend, returning on Monday 30 August. This downtime is necessary for server migration and necessary upgrades. As part of this downtime, we are asking all users to refrain from editing the map from during this time. Any edits you make or upload during this period may be lost. (JOSM users can still work offline, but please refrain from uploading until after your account is reactivated.)

This migration will allow us to move OGF to more stable servers with added capacity, which will allow us to:

  • Bring back custom map layers, including topo map;
  • Bring the standard renderer closer to its current OSM counterpart;
  • Upgrade to newer versions of iD; and
  • Provide a more reliable mapping experience for all users.

Currently, we anticipate that no major data loss will occur: your OGF account and past edits will automatically carry over to the new server, with no action required on your part. On Monday, your password will be automatically reset. To reactivate your account, you will be asked to accept the updated Terms and Conditions before resetting your password. While we do anticipate a smooth transition, some bugs and hiccups are an inevitability. If you do come across any issues during this process, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are also anticipating migrating the OGF wiki the following weekend; be on the lookout for additional communication regarding that effort.

Looking forward to many more years of happy mapping,

-Mayor OGF Transition Team Communications Coordinator

Hi, guys! After a lot of struggle to get JOSM to work on my computer, it finally does. I started mapping in a blue territory and now I have my own country, so I’m going to work on it, but I mapped with the OGF editor (for the same reason that it didn’t works on my computer) and until now I will do it with JOSM and I have a big question.

The first thing I want to edit is my borders and the coastline, but I don’t know how to do it and I don’t want to ruin anything or flood the continent continent.

Could someone explain to me how those elements are edited? I didn’t find how to map that in the examples or guides

Thanks.

By the way, my country is called Costa Azul (ingerish: Azure Coast), in Tarephia.

747 / 5000 Resultados de traducción Hello. good day. Greetings from Mexico.

My name is Ricardo. I have been in open geo fiction since December 2018. I really like mapping, currently I do it in Aztlán, in Tarephia. I have a lot of problems mapping following the reality of things, because I make very small or very large marks. I know that OGF offers a version so that you can map at scale from a program, and then paste your marks on the OGF map, but the truth is that English is quite difficult for me even though I use the translator and it has cost me a lot to install it in my computer, and then use it.

Someone would be so kind that you can explain to me how to use it in Spanish or know if there is a tutorial, even in English that I can see or some other recommendation. ¿?

Hola. buen dia.

Hello fellow Geofictionians,

after almost two years without any international travel (due to some virus whose name I forgot) I was fortunate enough to be able to travel through Italy for the last two weeks; by train, of course. Now, usually I wouldn’t use this website to post some elaborate travel blog - and don’t worry, I won’t - but I saw something I just had to share with this community.

Many of you probably have heard of the Vatican Museums before, and that they are a must-do-item on any travel list for Rome, just after the Forum Romanum and just before posing in front of other selfie-stick swinging tourists at the Trevi Fountain. What I, ignorant me, didn’t know before going there, is that the massive museum (which somehow fits into this 0.44 km² souvereign state alongside St. Peter and the HQ of the Catholic Church) not only features endless corridors of statues, tapestry, paintings and any kind of collectible you could think of, but also the “Galleria delle carte geografiche”. For anyone who spent a good part of their childhood sketching fantasy maps on paper, this corridor is like a trip on drugs. I’ll let the pictures below speak for themselves. 5/5 stars, 100 % recommended for mapping-enthusiasts!

The Geolympics Mapoff is officially closed! I’d like to thank all those who submitted entries for participating. There’s been a lot of great work done.

The Geolympic Committee has established a voting procedure for making games canonical, which is as follows.

  1. First Review: Once the deadline (8 Aug) occurs, the committee will briefly review each of the submitted bids to ensure they have a minimum level of quality that we’re comfortable with eventually making official. At least three members of the committee have to agree that the bid is sufficient; if two members don’t feel it has met that threshold, the bid is automatically rejected.
  2. Community Vote: Once the acceptable bids are determined, the committee will invite mappers to vote on all the acceptable bids on a 1-5 scale, with a 5 being a top-tier bid. This allows you, the community to have a say and still get to vote on things.
  3. Committee Vote: Concurrent with #2, each member of the committee will assign a 1-5 score for each bid as well. Once the Community Vote is done, the committee will average all five scores together (community vote + one score from each committee member) to come up with the composite score.
  4. Primary Ranking and Assignment: With composite scores in hand, for years with multiple bids, the bid with the highest composite score would earn the official awarding of the games for that year. For conflicting years (e.g., a year with a Northern summer games and a Southern winter games) the higher composite score of the two would determine the hemisphere for that year.
  5. Secondary Ranking and Assignment: For non-winning bids, the committee will reach out to each bidder and offer alternate options to complete the schedule. First preference would be for adjacent vacant years, followed by years within a 20-year window of the preferred bid. If the bid is still unassigned after that, we offer the bid as the host for a regional game instead.

Hey hey! Long time no see OGF. Final years of high school have really killed my free time, but I’m hoping now to establish some serious mapping. Basically, the only project of significance I’ve got done is now more or less complete; The Anaras-Clemente Intercontinental Airport, and a conjoining business park.

The idea is that it’s an older airport that has recently been significantly renovated and redeveloped; I’ve worked really hard to build it as realistic as possible and to irl scale. Connected is a business park, built as a new and walkable development for large offices for international companies; nice and conveniently near the airport. If anyone’s keen to set up office space for their own company please send me a message and you can designate a building :)

Hello, I am owner a territory called Xochimalta (https://opengeofiction.net/edit#map=11/-0.5994/55.5989), but I really have any questions about the possible history of the country, I would like to know what suggestions or what articles they talk about it. Xochimalta is a country with Mediterranean influences, Castellanese language, the most widespread religion is Christianity (more specific Catholicism), tropical climate (I know that in the real world a country like this on the equator is not real :( ), the territory is on Free Island (West Uletha). I have planned a time with monarchies, others with foreign invasions and the creation of a republic. I’m just not sure who the ancestors of that place are, and if the colonial era is a good idea? If a friend of OFG wants to make a suggestion about my mapping or Xochimaltan History , your opinion is welcome!

Have a nice day :)

I am curious, what are some features in a map that screams 3rd world? Are there any examples of OGF users that have built a 3rd world country. My dream country to map is an island nation that was once poor during the 1800s but after colonization it was turned into a trading metropolis. My goal is to map out an old town with ruins on the far side of the island nation, and a slum district.

Hi everyone,

Have mapped a lot in recent days, and I would take a break for other issue. But before that, I would like to present Tan Kong Island, my recent work.

It is just a grand planning, no details. I will finish the tram and metro system when I’m back. I know someone would say the island is a plagiarism of real world Hong Kong Island but I would not agree. It is just a homage. To be honest, yes, Tan Kong has carried many of my childhood memories, some places on the island looks similar to somewhere on Hong Kong Island before 1997 but has became history for some reasons, reconstruction, reclamation etc. I think this is my way to say goodbye to the city I born, I grew up and beloved. There are also some features only exists in my imagination such as a oil refinery plant which the idea comes from New Jersey. It provides job for Tan Kong’s working class and balance the economic structure.

However Tan Kong is still the home of Tan Kong Stock Exchange, and multiple commodity futures. Most financial activities gather at Intown, Ha Wan Tsai, Naval, and Yau Wan. If there is any multinational company wants to set up headquarter, regional headquarter, just let me know by message, I will map them.

I will stop here. Happy mapping!
