Feedback on Dunwic

Posted by Myrcia on 13 February 2019 in English.

I’ve been mapping Dunwic in its new spot for over a year now and I have to say I’m really happy with how my neighbourhoods are turning out, especially the city centre and areas north of the river.

Although I’ve been doing a lot of detailing my next plan is to start fleshing out the shape and limits of the city and when that’s done there won’t be much scope for making any major changes. That’s why I want to get people’s feedback on whether they think the shape of Dunwic is realistic and what kind of things they would expect to see in the surrounding area.

https://opengeofiction.net/#map=13/56.3649/20.0500

There won’t really be any traditional suburbia due to the political and planning history of the city. Instead Dunwic will be quite physically small but dense all the way to the edges like some Dutch cities.

Dunwic - Population Size

Posted by Myrcia on 20 May 2017 in English.

I just want to run Dunwic’s population estimates past people and see if they agree. I think the city is comparable in density and size to Dusseldorf, if you look at the OSM vs OGF comparison it seems quite reaosnable

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=13/56.3433/19.2463 osm.org/#map=13/51.2355/6.7861

I have yet to map all of the outlying towns and suburbs of Dunwic, there will be more and then it will be even more comparable. The population of the city of Dusseldorf (which does covers an area roughly similar to urban Dunwic) is 612,000. Is this a realistic number?

In that case I think it’d probably give the whole country a population of around 1,000,000 which is what I’ve always invisaged. Essentially it could be argued that Myrcia is so small that the whole island is the ‘Dunwic metro area’. It is only 1h40 by train to the farthest city on the island.

Anyway, thoughts welcome as always.

Greetings from Zoologischer Garten Bhf Berlin!

Wiki / Map Server Issues?

Posted by Myrcia on 21 March 2017 in English.

The last two days I’ve struggled to load any page on the wiki without the connection being reset or timing out. The map is allowing me to upload and download edits fairly easily but isn’t loading the tiles as smoothly as usual.

Is this just me or is everyone experiencing this? If there is a problem with server capacity or anything similar then would it be helpful to crowd fund some additional money to help with the servers? I would certainly be happy to help with a few € to keep OGF running if required.

European Trip planning

Posted by Myrcia on 1 March 2017 in English.

I’m planning a trip by rail around Europe to celebrate the end of my degree in May. I’ve got an idea of which major cities I’m going to travel to but I’d love to know if anyone had any tips on what to see or any good advice for travelling by rail across Europe.

London > Brussels > Hamburg > Copenhagen > Berlin > Bratislava > Wien > Prague > Warsaw > Gdansk > Newcastle (by plane) > London

OGF Forum

Posted by Myrcia on 16 January 2017 in English.

There’s been a lot of discussion about forums and chat rooms. A lot. I have created an OGF forum to allow for a more organised method of discussion about our OGF work.

I have not created an off-topic forum, I might do in the future but after the last few days it seems best to concentrate things on mapping, cities that inspire our mapping and the wiki.

Take a look, register and we’ll see how things go.

More realistic mass transit in Dunwic

Posted by Myrcia on 8 December 2016 in English.

One of the things I heard back clearly when I last asked for feedback on Dunwic was that my transport system was not as realistic as I wanted it to be. Since then I’ve been trying to fix the bugs and come up with a more realistic system for a city of Dunwic’s size and I’d like to know more about what you think.

Essentially I have reduced the light rail from 7 lines to 2 and transferred some of those lines over to the regional rail network. I have also re-routed lines, gotten rid of duplicating lines and tried to erase all the steep curves from the system.

Here are the maps you can compare side-by-side

What more can I do? Is the new arrangement more realistic?

New areas: Washinburh / Burdwic

Posted by Myrcia on 22 November 2016 in English.

This month I’ve been working on outer Dunwic, some farm land but also the satellite eards (boroughs) of Washinburh and Burdwic.

Burdwic - http://opengeofiction.net/#map=17/56.34238/19.18348

I think the Dunwic urban area is starting to make sense now, to feel like a real and full city and not just a collection of half-finished neighbourhoods. I am always interested to know what people think, in particular any constructive criticism.

Mapper's Challenge - Dunwic

Posted by Myrcia on 12 October 2016 in English.

I’m really looking forward to focusing on this month’s mapper’s challenge as I’ve been wanting to do some rural mapping for a while now.

To begin with I’m going to work on the rural areas immediately surrounding Dunwic (Myrcia’s capital) and then perhaps think about starting to map other rural areas as I get more confident in how I want Myrcian countryside to look.

My frame of reference will be Great Britain and Ireland for the most part.

Villages I’ve worked on in the last few days:

Eclesburh

I’ll update this diary entry as I work more throughout the month.

Firstly I gave Flyht Myrcia (Myrcia’s major airline) a brand refresh last night and designed a nice boarding pass (aided by the fictional OGF universe where airlines aren’t stuck with 20 year old printers!). So please take a look and let me know what you think.

If your country is in Uletha or Tarephia then I’d like to establish an air route from Dunwic Flyhthæfen International. Just reply to this post or send me a message. Also happy for reciprocal flights or codeshare agreements to be established with your airlines.

Isle & City Games

Posted by Myrcia on 14 August 2016 in English.

The Isle & City Games are my creation to provide a sporting arena for small nation states, city states and islands who wouldn’t be able to host a Geolympiad event and who aren’t all that competitive in the medals table.

Founded in 2000, the first ICG were in Myrcia in 2004. The games are bi-annual and take place in the spring, around late-April. The events are a scaled-down version of the Geolympics. The host nation selects 25 events to host which can range from sailing to decathlon to lacrosse.

Any nation of under 2 million can compete. Any city with a population of under 2 million can enter as a city team. Any semi-autonomous island or group of islands with a population of under 2 million can enter as an island team.

Dunwic Flyhthæfen International

Posted by Myrcia on 27 July 2016 in English.

Hello again everyone. I really appreciated the feedback I got on my last post about my central railway station and now I have redesigned my airport and need some input again. I know a lot less about airport design than I do about railway stations.

Wiki article

Dunwic Flyhthæfen International

Before today Myrcia had a huge airport which I built thinking it would be a regional hub but, realistically, I think it was over optimistic and so I decided to start over again. You can see here the difference between the two airports:

I hope this new airport is a more realistic size. I’ve also improved the transport links, simplified the motorways and re-routed some of the railways.

Dunwic Mid station

Posted by Myrcia on 4 June 2016 in English.

I’ve been working on a re-build on Dunwic’s central station this week. Sarepava gave me some very helpful feedback on the old station and I decided to start from scratch to rebuild it. It’s inspired by Dutch stations where the railway is on an elevated level with a concourse at ground level and metro tracks below ground.

I am particularly proud of the station plan on the wiki page.

Dunwic - work ongoing

Posted by Myrcia on 26 May 2016 in English.

Just thought I’d give a bit of an update on what I’m working on in Dunwic. I’ve been working on improving the city that I’d mapped too quickly and without enough detail. I’m getting close to having completed the entire city centre. I have also been changing names from Ingerish to Myrcian (based on Old English).

Here are some areas I’ve recently completed and am quite proud of:

Kirkcoleg Myrcia

Map

The city’s university, built in the 1930s in a collegiate style by a garden city architect. It’s still not 100% finished but it’s something I keep going back to and adding detail and more buildings.

Forshæig / Vesterburh

Map

I began these neighbourhoods last week when I got back from being in the Netherlands. I got rid of the neighbourhoods that were here and started from scratch building canals and creating an antiques shopping area.

Nórdburh

Map

Another area I’ve recently re-built from scratch. It’s an 18th century street plan inspired by Sir Christopher Wren. It includes the neo-classical cathedral (St Anselm Milkirk) and the cliff railway which leads down to the river.

Hýþ Terminal

Map

This area used to be a fairly clumsy harbour that was one of the first things I mapped. I got rid of all that and re-designed it to be more realistic. I think the retail park, even though it’s quite a simple thing, makes it look particularly realistic.

Feedback always welcome!
